The digital format has caused major changes in libraries and serials cataloging operations have been affected as much as other areas. But how extensive are the changes? What are the effects on workload? How does the new environment affect production line staff? Finally, what do Electronic Resource Management Systems (ERMs) mean for the future of serials cataloging?

Report of the Jan. 1999 meeting of the ALA/ALCTS Role of the Professional in Academic Technical Services Discussion Group.
Many technical services professionals feel that library school programs are not offering students the courses and/or content necessary to enter the profession in an entry-level technical services position. The presentations given at this meeting offered attendees the opportunity to hear the results of a recent research project on this issue as well as various viewpoints concerning library education in this part of the field. Most the presentations and the discussion focused on the education of professional catalogers. Speakers included Michelle Turvey, Dea Borneman and Karen Letarte, from Southwest Missouri State University; Rebecca Lubas, Catalog Librarian for Serials Documents at Ball State University; and Catherine Nelson, Head of the Serials Dept. at University of California, Santa Barbara.

The impact of Web publishing on the organization of cataloging functions
Grenci, Mary C.
Organization of cataloging functions
Cataloging -- Management
Web publishing trends
Electronic journal publishing trends
Contains the main article, appendix, and files showing each of the described organizational models.
Cataloging rules have long been organized according to the physical format and monograph versus serial nature of publications. This organization of the rules has resulted in the rise of several typical organizational models that make these same delineations. Web publishing is having a profound effect on both the nature of publications and the number of electronic resources being published and selected for inclusion in library catalogs, and is causing a major shift in the type of materials finding their way into cataloging workflows. Institutions that organize their cataloging functions according to one of the traditional models are finding themselves increasingly unable to meet the demands being placed upon them in this new environment. Traditional models of organization can, and must, be modified in order to successfully deal with this problem.

Catalog access to web resources
A presentation given in 1998 at the 15th Online Northwest Annual Conference.
With the recent proliferation of World Wide Web sites, more and more publishers are creating sites that are related to print publications. The possible relationships between the sites and their print counterparts are virtually limitless. This presentation focuses on providing catalog access to related Web sites from within the print publication record.
