In the story of the German colonies, from the first individual commercial enterprises in Africa through the fateful clauses of Versailles, can be found many factors explaining German actions today. Certainly an Empire that was founded, developed and lost in the space of an individual lifetime is something more than passing interest. On this discussion, however, the historical aspect must be studied only for the purpose of orientation, and will be subordinated wholly to the larger issues in question.
