The explanation is attempted in fairly narrow economic terms; this is, the historical and institutional patterns lying behind the economic situation are not discussed except incidentally. Rather we picture the output of Japan and of the United States as being the result of employment of different factors of production available. In particular we are interested in distinguishing the agricultural and non-agricultural contributions to differences in incomes, and in assessing for each sector, the importance of materials, labor, and capital equipment in causing differences in observable incomes.
