The John Day Planning Area (see Maps 1 and 2), which is part of Oregon’s Burns District, comprises those public lands within Grant County and a northern portion of Harney County. Four alternatives for managing the public lands in the John Day planning area were analyzed in the Resource Management Plan/Environmental Impact Statement. The proposed Resource Management Plan (the Preferred Alternative in the Resource Management Plan/EIS) emphasizes management, production on a sustained yield basis and use of renewable resources on the majority of public lands in the John Day planning area while providing protection, maintenance or enhancement of cultural, soil, water, botanical and recreational resource values and big, small and nongame habitats. This alternative is the environmentally preferable alternative and the one that has been selected for the John Day Resource Management Plan.
