This high visibility may well feature in its apparent primacy. Although culture change may result solely from the interplay of internal forces, few if any cultures have ever been free of external influence. Contact between groups, or their more adventurous representatives, must be reckoned with in analysis of change. It has, of course, been the focus of much anthropological research.
