Item Open Access Collaboration in User Interface Design, or Bringing the Public Service Perspective to Building a Digital Library(The Haworth Press, Inc., 2006) Harper, Corey A.This article discusses the potential for interaction and collaboration between Public Services and Technical Services librarians in the development of Digital Libraries. It discusses general principles for interface design, the need to take into consideration aspects of context and audience when developing interfaces, and the unique contribution that can be made by Public Services professionals in taking these factors into account. It concludes with a look at some Web 2.0 concepts and discusses future directions that include more end-user interaction in digital library interfaces.Item Open Access Emphasizing the social aspect of textbook adoption(bepress, 2020) Martinez, Jessica; Doney, Jylisa; Stoddart, Richard A.Faculty adoption of open educational resources (OER) has remained low even though previous research demonstrates potential positive outcomes for students and lower costs overall. The social aspect of textbook adoption, which already exists in the traditional textbook adoption process, may be a missing link in OER advocacy. To examine the social aspects of textbook adoption, this chapter reports how faculty selected and used traditional textbooks and the OER landscape on campus. The faculty textbook adoption experiences detailed in this chapter demonstrate how social aspects might inform OER efforts, reaffirm current practices, and advance OER advocacy efforts.Item Open Access Encoding Library of Congress Subject Headings in SKOS: Authority Control for the Semantic Web(2006-09-04T01:11:03Z) Harper, Corey A.This paper explores using XSLT stylesheets to translate LCSH Authority Records from MARC/XML or MADS XML formats into RDF documents according to the SKOS project's Quick Guide to Publishing a Thesaurus on the Semantic Web. Creating an RDF Data Store that represents the content of LCSH will have tremendous long-term benefits in allowing a greater breadth of applications to make full use of the relationships between concepts provided by LC Subject Headings.Item Open Access If a Picture is Worth a Thousand Words, Shouldn’t We Address Our Image Scanning Standards?(Routledge, 2013) Bankole, Karen; Butler, Barbara A.Item Open Access Leaving the Big Deal: Consequences and Next Steps (Conference Paper)(2011-06) Fowler, David C.; Nabe, Jonathan A., 1966-Many libraries are facing difficult fiscal climates with serials inflation, budget cutbacks, and reductions in governmental allocations requiring difficult collection management decisions. Libraries may find their flexibility to plan and react unduly restricted due to being contracted to one or more Big Deals, in which they are obligated to buy large, inflexible title lists from big publishers for a set price. Many libraries may have considered exiting these Big Deals but have been reluctant to, due to fear of the unknown, fear of the difficulty of exiting these deals, and fear of the consequences in terms of lost access to journals, faculty and student reaction and financial and legal consequences. This presentation discusses the experience of Southern Illinois University-Carbondale and the University of Oregon in leaving Big Deals, provides data on impacts on interlibrary loans, community response, and collection budgets , details the steps required before and after the decision, , and describes the benefits that other libraries could achieve by following the example of these two ARL libraries.Item Open Access Library of Congress controlled vocabularies and their application to the Semantic Web(2006-09-04T01:17:33Z) Harper, Corey A.; Tillett, Barbara B.This article discusses how various controlled vocabularies, classification schemes and thesauri can serve as some of the building blocks of the Semantic Web. These vocabularies have been developed over the course of decades, and can be put to great use in the development of robust web services and Semantic Web technologies. The article covers how initial collaboration between the Semantic Web, Library and Metadata communities are creating partnerships to complete work in this area. It then discusses some cores principles of authority control before talking more specifically about subject and genre vocabularies and name authority. It is hoped that future systems for internationally shared authority data will link the world's authority data from trusted sources to benefit users worldwide. Finally, the article looks at how encoding and markup of vocabularies can help ensure compatibility with the current and future state of Semantic Web development and provides examples of how this work can help improve the findability and navigation of information on the World Wide Web.Item Open Access “Planned, Plotted, Played, Pictured by Students”: The Ambitious Amateurs of Ed’s Coed (1929)(Film History, 2019) Aronson, Michael; Peterson, ElizabethThis article provides a historical analysis of Ed’s Coed (1929), one of the earliest and most accomplished feature-length films made by college students in the United States. Student-made films of the silent era have received little critical attention, but they should be understood within the diverse overlapping categories that encompass amateur local filmmaking. Engaging the underexplored resource of student newspapers, the authors document how Ed’s Coed, a 35mm college-life romantic comedy, was produced by University of Oregon students working alongside a professional Hollywood second-unit cameraman. The resulting production history reveals the film crew’s sophisticated approach to publicity, fund-raising, and cinematography that beneficially extends our understanding of the range of amateur local practices in the 1920s.Item Open Access Researching the National Pastime(2006-01-24T22:55:40Z) Smith, Ted D.; Watson, Mark R. (Mark Randall)An essay describing an introductory college course on research methods that uses baseball as a subject focus. The work details the authors’ experience in teaching the course and explains the theory behind using baseball as a pedagogical tool. Includes advice and suggestions for those considering such an approach to teaching research methods to lower division college students.Item Open Access Sudden Selector's Guide to Mathematics Resources(Core: a division of the American Library Association; Chicago, 2021) Zeidman-Karpinski, Annie; Meier, John; Johnson, NatashaThis book is meant to provide the new librarian, the new-to-math librarian, or the general reader interested in mathematics libraries at colleges and universities an overview of how modern library collections are created to serve mathematics students, faculty, and researchers. This is also more than a collection development book. All aspects of our jobs as contemporary librarians are interconnected, so we address topics like information literacy instruction, scholarly communication, and general liaison work. We also acknowledge and try to explain broader issues in higher education such as math in general education, women in mathematics, and social media in academia. Throughout the text, the terms mathematics and math are used interchangeably (maths is often used in non-US English speaking countries in lieu of math). Of all faculty served by libraries, mathematicians are universally fierce defenders of the library. In our experience, everything is potentially an important book, journal, or resource for mathematicians. Yet, we do not have unlimited budgets and time, so this book will help you focus on the core needs of your users through an understanding of the profession, your institution, and your library. Mathematicians also value and use older materials and print, so weeding materials is a greater challenge for math than other sciences.Item Open Access Unit Costs for Domestic Approval Books(2010-01-05T00:08:35Z) Slight-Gibney, Nancy; Tabb, Bruce H., 1959-
