Item Open Access Snow fuels reduction project environmental assessment(2008-03) Deschutes National Forest (Agency : U.S.)Proposes to treat 5790 acres to lessen wildfire intensity, reduce resistance to control, and provide safer access for both firefighters and the public. Treatment units are strategically located on the landscape so that firefighters can safely and effectively manage wildfires, with an emphasis on protecting recreation areas, eagle and osprey habitat, riparian reserves, the Sheridan and Browns Late Successional Reserves, and the West and South Bachelor Roadless Area. Activities include reducing heavy fuel loading in areas of standing and down dead wood, thinning dense stands of live trees, burning forest debris, and using machinery to pile and burn slash and mow brush.
