Item Open Access Database of Transportation-Marking Phenomena: Traffic Control Devices(Mount Angel Abbey, 1998) Clearman, BrianItem Open Access A first study in transportation markings: The U.S.(Mount Angel Abbey, 1992) Clearman, BrianItem Open Access Handle With Care: A Pedagogical Theory of Touch in Teaching Dance Technique Based on Four Case Studies(Texas Woman's University, 2002-12) Collen, Robin LatshawThe purpose of this study was to investigate how human touch may be used within a modern dance technique class to facilitate effective teaching ,and learning. This inquiry was based on two initial assumptions: (a) touch is an effective teaching and learning tool for modern dance, and (b) a modern dance technique class defines its own culture within which pedagogical touch can be,\ natural and integral experience. Two qualitative traditions of inquiry were used: the phenomenological study and the multiple case study. Fieldwork took place at four institutions of higher education. Methodology centered on interviews, participant observation, and questionnaires. Memos \Vere written from transcribed interviews, questionnaires, and videotaped observations. A list of relevant coding categories of emergent themes was developed. Nel Noddings' theory of care in moral education was used as an initial framework for a theory models approach to analysis and interpretation of the data. Laban Movement Analysis was used as an analytical tool. The effective use of touch requires teachers to acknowledge their own philosophies of teaching and learning, and to recognize the importance of students' backgrounds with touch and dance. In this context teachers develop environments for learning through touch. Teachers mentor touch, enabling students to fully engage in the learning process as touchers and touchees. Teachers develop methods for integrating touch into the flow of their classes. An emphasis on student-to-student-touch experiences engages students in tactile dialogue, providing students with practice in caring, paying attention, remaining flexible, cultivating relationships, searching for appropriate responses, and kinesthetic empathy. A pedagogical theory of touch was developed. Three core constructs are: (a) the inside/outside nature of dancing, and of learning movement; (b) the importance of student histories; and the significance of intentional touch. The necessity for teachers to account for these foundational elements to insure the effective use of touch, was stressed. Meta-dance Practice is a teaching and learning theory which was developed in this study. This theory-which describes and explains touch-based teaching and learning experiences that move beyond dance technique--resides within the paradigm of constructivist learning and embodies themes of moral education.Item Open Access Healthcare Policy Redux: A Tax Policy Analysis of the 2008 Presidential Candidates’ Proposals(University of Oregon, 2008) Hobbs, Richard G.During the 2008 Presidential Campaign, the candidates have debated proposals for solving America’s health care challenges. But the real health care debate will happen after America elects a new President and Congress. During this upcoming debate, Congress should not simply follow the new President, but should lead by thoroughly considering the various proposals and select the very best ideas for improving our ailing health care system. As an aid to the debate, this article collates the proposals of not only the three remaining candidates, but also those who have dropped out, then analyzes them from a tax policy perspective. The article first describes, via the statements of the candidates, the serious challenges facing America’s health care system. Next, the article describes the three categories candidate ideas fall into: Healthcare for All, Universal Healthcare, and Deregulated, Independent Healthcare. Then the article analyzes each category using classical tax policy criteria. Finally, the article discusses the efficacy of each category and concludes with which one appears best from a tax policy perspective.Item Open Access Ideologies of the Men's Movement(1989-08) Williams, Larry S.In this paper I shall argue that a shift in state ideology has contributed to greater visibility for one ideological segment of the men's movement whom I call the "masculinists." The masculinists join with restrictive liberals to argue that feminism has gone too far and that radical feminists, in particular, are demanding too much. I contrast the masculinist men with pro-feminist and traditionalist men in their respective ideologies, their relation to state ideology and patriarchy, and their ability to attain public visibility.Item Open Access International aeronautical navigation aids(Mount Angel Abbey, 1994) Clearman, BrianItem Open Access International Marine Aids to Navigation(Mount Angel Abbey, 1988) Clearman, BrianItem Open Access International Marine Aids to Navigation(Mount Angel Abbey, 2010-08-08) Clearman, Brian3rd edition of this work. The study includes an introduction, historical surveys, a classification of the spectrum of aids as well as surveys of messages, meanings, subdivisions.Item Open Access International Railway Signals(Mount Angel Abbey, 1991) Clearman, BrianItem Open Access International Railway Signals(Mount Angel Abbey, 2015-07-26) Clearman, BrianThis monograph is the second edition of International Railway Signals. While it bears a substantial resemblance to the original study (1991) there are substantial changes. Terminology is a significant problem with railway safety devices. Signals, sign and markings were included in that first edition but a wide range of T-M forms were omitted including acoustical, radio aids and level/grade crossings. This is true both of terms and content. The summary of terms in this study contrasts with those of the railway database volume (2009): signals, signals, markers. That newer work includes a variety of terms not listed in the title and other apparatus. The diversity of railway devices is compounded by the lack of a more precise general term of railway signals that can encompass other forms. The earlier preface provided a sharp distinction between signals and signalling (the former is primary; the latter is peripheral). The latter term refers to the control and operation of signals and accompanying safety appliances and procedures (e.g., systems, block systems, interlockings, CTC, electronic configurations). While signalling is not a core issue in this study of apparatus devices producing messages and meanings it is an integral element of this study. The older edition often refers to messages but not the meaning. While message might encompass the meaning it is more accurate to speak of the physical appearance of the messages, and the semiotic meaning that becomes attached to the physical dimenson.Item Open Access International Traffic Control Devices(Mount Angel Abbey, 2004) Clearman, BrianItem Open Access T-M General Classification(Mount Angel Abbey, 2010-12-24) Clearman, BrianT-M Classification monograph draws together the full range of diverse & numerous T-M types. This task is achieved by constructing a taxonomic matrix which draws together by uniting them through modes and energy forms underlying the messages. This is the 3rd edition.Item Open Access T-M General Table of Contents(Mount Angel Abbey, 2010-01-31) Clearman, BrianTable of contents is a collection of individual Table of Contents for the 15 current studies. It is intended to be a vehicle for creating a cohesive unit of studies. A general preface is included that surveys the project with an emphasis on semiotics.Item Open Access T-M: An Integrative Systems Perspective: Communication, Information, Semiotics(Mount Angel Abbey, 2014) Clearman, BrianThis study focusses on the integrative character of T-M forms. It brings together the various modes and safety aids. Semiotics, Communication, Information provide a foundation and internal linkage. T-M indicators, messages, meanings form the larger part of the work.Item Open Access T-M: An Integrative Systems Perspective: Communication, Information, Semiotics ctive: Communication, Information, Semitics(Mount Angel Abbey, 2011-06-13) Clearman, BrianThis study focusses on the integrative character of T-M forms. It brings together the various modes and safety aids in contrast to modal studies centered on subdivisions of safety aids. Semiotics, Communication, Information provide a foundation and internal linkage. T-M indicators, messages, meanings form the larger part of the work.Item Open Access Transportation Markings Database: Railway Signals, Signs, Marks, Markers(Mount Angel Abbey, 2000) Clearman, BrianItem Open Access Transportation Markings General Table of Contents and Index(Mount Angel Abbey, 2014) Clearman, BrianT-M General Table of Contents is a collection of the individual Table of Contents for the 15 current monographs.
