Item Open Access ACCESSIBLE OUTDOOR BAG DESIGN & FORM INNOVATION FOR NATURE ENTHUSIASTS(2022-04-03) Malekitabriz, GazalThis project is aimed to research, design and develop form solutions for the collection of bags. As people are influenced by form and style of a product, changing a shape from a monotonous design to a more interesting form inspires users and rises a positive feeling (Bond, 2017). Additionally, abstract forms, which are a simplified version of freeform and asymmetrical organic freeform shapes, should associate with their original form and be a symbolic in nature. Lastly, circular, and elliptical shapes, if used in freeform design, show unity and protection to the product user. (Wang, 2015)Item Open Access AIRBENDER(University of Oregon, 2020) Bartoszek, OliThe starting target market for the Airbender is both males and females between the ages of 20 - 30. It is targeted at endurance athletes, but more specifically sub-elite distance runners who train 4-6 times a week primarily for personal wellness. In major cities across the world, and more notably in developing countries with poor environmental regulations, air pollution is considered a major risk to health, responsible for as many as 8 million deaths per year worldwide11 and a decrease in life expectancy of 2 years12. "To put this into perspective, this means that air pollution causes more extra deaths a year than tobacco smoking, which the World Health Organization estimates was responsible for an extra 7.2 million deaths in 2015. Smoking is avoidable but air pollution is not.”11 Although there are various industrial and recreational air filtration masks available, there are no options designed specifically for athletes where fit and air flow rate are the most important features. As it relates to China and Beijing in particular, studies by Greenpeace have found that “the capital’s smog is laced with a range of heavy metals, the worst being arsenic, which reaches six times the Chinese and European limits on heavily polluted days.”13 In the same study the researcher commented, “even running on lightly polluted days a lot of people will think, ‘Oh, the AQI is only 100 so I can go for a jog. What many of people don’t know is that jogging when the AQI is 100 is the same as walking when the AQI is 250. If you wouldn’t walk without a mask on such a heavily polluted day, then don’t go running when it’s lightly polluted out.”13 All of this is to say that quite simply, exercising in city with air as polluted as Beijing’s can have serious implications on your health. Currently, aside from industrial and various lifestyle masks, there is nothing geared towards athletes who are most in need of protection from pollution.Item Open Access Any Body: Process Book(University of Oregon, 2020) Bettencourt, ChrissyThe goal of this project is to design road and trail running shoes for plus-size women. The three main focus points for the project will be on fit, underfoot cushioning, and aesthetic appearance. The research will begin with a thorough analysis of plus-size foot scans. The scans will be measured at various cross-sections to collect data about a variety of foot sizes and shapes. Potential areas to explore in regard to the foot scans are proportions and girth of the foot, location of the malleolus, and arch structure. The data will then be compared to that of a medium width shoe last to determine the common problem areas using data comparison and visual inspection of foot scan and last overlays. One of the 3D foot scans will then be used to design a new last. Once a new last has been created, special design considerations will be made to create a shoe that is specifically tuned to a plus-size foot for underfoot cushioning and upper design. Cushioning will be designed considering the unique needs of a woman who carries more weight than a straight-sized woman. Typically, no consideration is taken into the way the shoe grades when designing a wide shoe. Furthermore, when creating a more anatomical last, proportions are usually skewed such that the shoe no longer looks ideal when compared to traditionally designed shoes. This project will attempt to create a shoe for the wider, flatter foot of a plus-size runner that is aesthetically pleasing. The goal is to design a road shoe and a trail shoe that plus-size women want to wear—shoes that women ask for when they look for running shoes, and not just the only thing that fits.Item Open Access APTURE APPAREL(University of Oregon, 2021-06) Conduff, CarlyEvery year, whether it be a national championship, world cup, world series or Olympic games athletes seem to break the boundaries of what was thought was physically possible. While this can be partially attributed to athlete mindset, there is a huge role that technology advancements in training regimen plays. Aspirations of athlete optimization has been driving the field of biomechanics and methods of training for decades. One critical industry to watch in this space is motion capture. As technology increases, the accuracy follows, as does the price point to achieve this. Budget motion capture apps have arisen, but leave require manual post processing, or have high levels of inaccuracies. There has been very little explored in the area of apparel aiding in the function of the technology, rather than an accessory to it. The intent of Apture Apparel to create functional, aesthetic athlete sports product that seamlessly integrates into the accuracy of accessible motion capture as well as creating heightened body awareness to offer positional feedback to young athletes.Item Open Access Axiom: Adaptive Outdoor Footwear(2021) Rottman, BrianItem Open Access Backcountry Ski Equipment for Courses That Cover More Distance Than Elevation(University of Oregon, 2024-06-14) Waits, JoeThe user I am designing for ski tours on courses with more distance than elevation gain. They ski in places such as the northern Midwest, Alaska, Colorado, or eastern Canada. These are all places that are cold enough to receive snow. The places this user tends to recreate are large landscapes that can feature mountains, valleys, rivers, and lakes. While the user might live near mountains or not near mountains, they seek out flatter terrain in hopes of traversing the landscape and covering long distances. Backcountry skiing is a large industry in the United States. According to the Sierra Sun, “SnowSports Industries America estimates that there are more than six million backcountry riders in the United States” (Absolon, 2023). These users are advanced to expert skiers who enjoy exploring beyond the boundary of the ski resort. The user has experience skiing and might have experience backcountry skiing in larger mountains. They follow the general trend of the growth of backcountry skiing. Backcountry skiing is the fastest growing segment in skiing (Rosalsky, 2020).Item Open Access BalLin A footwear collection dedicated for Jeremy Lin(University of Oregon, 2021) Deng, YitongItem Open Access BalLin: A footwear collection dedicated for Jeremy Lin(2021) Deng, YitongThis capstone project is to design a footwear collection with a pair of basketball shoes and a pair of recovery shoes for a former NBA player Jeremy Lin. I create thoughtful designs that prioritize the intended user’s needs. My designs focus on the people behind the sport, not just the sport itself. They allow users to develop respect for nature and foster a deep connection between the two.Item Open Access A Collection of Winter Apparel for Chinese Male Couriers: Including a Hard Shell Jacket, a Insulated Layer, and a Cargo Pants(University of Oregon, 2021-06) Fan, BoqiAt present, the vast majority of couriers work with equipment that uses cheap materials with simple production processes under cost pressure. Their most important use is perhaps only to indicate the brand of the courier company. The equipment mostly lacks a human touch for the couriers. Furthermore, they show that the hirers have neglected to invest in the company's branding in a far-sighted way. So in this project, I will focus on improving the silhouette, visual elements, and functional integration of existing products. The goal is for the kit to enhance the courier experience and allow the courier company to convey a more professional corporate image to the end-user and the potential audience. It is worth mentioning that numbers of Chinese logistics companies in recent years have good performance; there are enough funds to support staff uniforms upgrade, which makes the feasibility of my project has a reasonable foundation. With that being considered, this project is designed specifically for experienced male couriers who aged from 20 to 40 and work in 1st to 3rd tier cities in China. It is a collection of garments include a hardshell jacket and pant that provides the wearer with an improved weather-adaptive feature, an ergonomic fit, and an optimized pockets layout. It comes with a modular insulated layer that has a body mapped heat/ventilation zone. This will ultimately improve the couriers’ well being and professionalism.Item Open Access Cork 12L Freeride World Tour Snow Safety Airbag Pack and Airbag Vest(University of Oregon, 2024-06-13) Karow, Ryan M.Freeride skiing and snowboarding represent a recent evolution in extreme snow sports, embracing a diverse range of competitive disciplines. The Freeride World Tour stands as the pinnacle of competition for the most daring Freeride skiers and snowboarders, displaying their unparalleled skill, creativity, and style on some of the world's most challenging terrain. To meet the demands of such high-level performance, there is an urgent call for innovation to elevate the quality of equipment, as current offerings often fall short of expectations. Each year around fifty top competing riders qualify for this intense competition and compete internationally at four to six stops with the ultimate goal of qualifying for finals in Verbier, Switzerland, the final stop of the tour (WE ARE THE HOME OF FREERIDE, n.d.). With this extreme level of riding comes the highest level of consequences. One bad fall and riders can tumble down 50° slopes over cliff bands, rock faces, and cause huge avalanche that can bury them. To combat these risks, riders are now required to use back protectors, avalanche airbags, helmets, and other avalanche gear at a minimum, to protect against these hazards. Each of these products perform well but not in conjunction with each other. To embrace the fluidity of movement, the elevated stakes, the ever-present threat of avalanches, and address the existing issues of system integration, there's an imperative demand for a fresh line of safety equipment tailored for freeride skiers and snowboarders. This innovation is crucial to not only safeguard riders but also enhance their performance and overall enjoyment. This research explores, substantiates, and proposes innovative solutions for backcountry skiing avalanche airbag packs and vests.Item Open Access Cotopaxi Footwear Line Development(2021) Hintze, Douglas M.Item Open Access CURB: A Collection of Golf Clubs and Balls to be Optimized for the Urban Environment(University of Oregon, 2023) Whited, DrewHow can we create a unique set of clubs and corresponding ball to help urban golfers differentiate themselves and to be played safely in urban environments while withstanding the impact against pavement? As urban golf has a major theme of saving money and having a relaxed minimalist mentality the club set will aim to adhere to those ideals by consisting of only the essential clubs that will be needed to accomplish the jobs to be done in a competitive environment. The set will consist of a three club system. First, a club to be optimized for distance to be used for the golfer to generally use as their first club of each hole to gain maximum distance. Second, an iron to be optimized for the approach shots that will be made for medium range while maintaining accuracy and control to get as close to the “hole” as possible. Lastly, a club to be used for the short range putts that will be optimized for maximum accuracy and precision to finish the hole in a minimal amount of strokes while keeping in mind the style of holes that are present in an urban golf environment. Coinciding with this club set, a golf ball must be designed with the environment it is used in and its performance as the primary focus. The ball must fly in a similar and effective manner as a traditional golf ball but made to prevent damage to the windows, fences, cars, etc. that is abundant within cities.Item Open Access Desert Nomad Dust Storm Protection Collection(University of Oregon, 2020-12-08) Smith, MCIn a world altered by global warming, many cities have fallen due to desertification. It will accomplish this by designing a collection of products that let adventurers do more with less and go anywhere their feet can take them. A range of versatile footwear that can seamlessly transition between the airplane cabin, jungle floor, desert dunes, and urban promenade made with sustainable, performance driven materials will accomplish these goals. How could we maximize freedom of exploration for adventure photographers during travel to and within rugged warm weather environments while minimizing gear and environmental impact? This thesis aims to find a balance between efficient travel and ample gear, high performance and high protection, as well as maximized environmental adaptability and minimum environmental impact. There are always sacrifices to be made when seeking adventure, and it is the goal of this thesis to optimize and even eliminate some of those sacrifices to best prepare the most ambitious adventure travel photographers. A cohesive system of modular footwear focusing on two soles and three uppers should adapt to the needs of the most demanding travelers.Item Open Access Designing for Bikepacking: A Holistic Approach(University of Oregon, 2023) Sindler, JesseWhile playing or engaging in many sports an athlete only demands performance from their apparel and equipment for, at most, several hours and sometimes for only several seconds. Often, during these moments of engagement, the athlete is performing a repetitive set of movements, such as running, lifting, kicking, dribbling, or peddling in environments that have been curated to be as consistent as possible in order to both literally and figuratively level the field of play. This consistency allows the design of the related apparel and equipment to provide for a more shallow set of needs and jobs to be done. Other sports, by their very nature, demand a greater level of immersion, both in terms of participation and design. Some even require an entire shift in lifestyle to participate, sometimes for only a day, but often for weeks and sometimes months at a time. While engaging in such sports, an athlete’s entire way of being changes. While any athlete will be experiencing the world in a different way during the brunt of their physical exertion (and possibly for a brief time before and after), these particular sports change how the athlete rests, sleeps, and shelters, how they consume and prepare nutrition, how they maintain their personal hygiene and provide for their healthcare, how the use and maintain their equipment and apparel and even how they relate and engage with their environment and other people. Because of this, these sports require equipment and apparel that is designed with a consideration of the athlete’s needs during the peak of their physical exertion as well as many other user moments.
