Item Open Access 21st Century Skills and the "4Cs" in the English Language Classroom(American English Institute, University of Oregon, 2018) Halverson, AndyFor many language teachers around the world, the classrooms of today may look and feel very different to those that we remember from our own childhood. In teacher training workshops and professional development activities, you may have heard talk about 21st century skills and “new literacies.” Many of us have realized that our students today need new sets of skills to prepare them to be successful participants in the globalized society of the future. But for many busy teachers, these new skills and concepts may be unclear or you may be struggling with how to implement them in the actual classroom. In this text, we’ll be considering some of the fundamental changes that are currently taking place in 21st century education by looking at the 4Cs, and, importantly, we’ll also consider how these changes can and should be impacting English language teaching and learning around the globe.Item Open Access 525 Words(Center for Community Arts & Cultural Policy, Arts & Administration Program, University of Oregon, 2017) Susholtz, Lynn; Voelker-Morris, Julie L.Item Open Access Abortion Law as Protection Narrative(University of Oregon School of Law, 2024-05-01) Inniss, Lolita BucknerThis is Article explores the 1820 criminal case of Connecticut minister Ammi Rogers. It uses an analytical, legal, and historical approach to explore the story of Ammi Rogers and what his story offers to our understanding of contemporary considerations of abortion. This Article, however, goes well beyond the historic account conveyed in legal documents and incorporates an approach more often seen in literature—a narrative analysis of law. The combination of legal, historical, and narrative analysis reveals the history, culture, and politics that have played a part in how we understand abortion in the United States.Item Open Access About the Cover Illustration(Fembot Collective, 2015) Hederson, AmeryahItem Open Access Abstraction and Empathy on the Eve of World War I(University of Oregon, 2014) Simmons, William SherwinThis essay considers continuities between the impetus towards abstraction within Jugendstil and Expressionism. Both Hermann Obrist and Franz Marc sought through empathy to intuit and image abstract forces at work within the materiality of the organic and inorganic natural worlds. Their creative practice and theoretical writings share much with Wilhelm Worringer’s discussion of the “expressive abstraction” found in the Gothic style, which unified the organic with the abstract. This essay explores the trajectories of this visual and textual discourse, paying particular attention to their nexus during 1914 in Obrist’s monumental sculptures at the Werkbund Exhibition in Cologne and the development of Marc’s paintings over the course of that year.Item Open Access Academic Urban Labs: Architectural design studios to address local challenges(University of Oregon, 2019) Delpino-Chamy, Montserrat; Rivera, María Isabel; Alarcon, MabelConsidering the complexity of ecological and social challenges, universities and the teaching of architecture offer a unique opportunity to create real-life design problems from their local communities, thereby engaging their students in the learning process. On this context, this paper presents the idea of Academic Urban Laboratories as a methodology to enhancing regional development as well as to betterprepare students for professional careers, exposing them to the benefits of holistic, integrated design outcomes. This paper offers a review of the main challenges that the teaching of architecture currently faces, followed by a review of emerging frameworks to improve pedagogical methodologies in this discipline. A rubric to assess Academic Urban Labs’ experiences is presented, which has been applied to the analysis of three architecture design studios experiences, addressing the following connections: elective course and local community, studio and local government, studio and international congress. Finally, the main reflections are related to examining the link between academic and local stakeholders, assessing strategies to increase the efficiency of sustainable outcomes, and reducing the time demand on the management processes to support this methodology. From the results, it is possible to identify an increase in social responsibility, as well as a commitment among students towards more sustainable development, thus supporting the idea of designing new learning experiences connecting academia with real-life problems.Item Open Access Accounts of the Anti-Jewish Riot in Valencia, July 1391(University of Oregon Libraries, 2024) Agresta, Abigail; Miguel-Prendes, Sol; Wacks, David A.This unit contains a brief introduction and four accounts of the anti-Jewish riot that took place in Valencia on July 9, 1391. During this riot, one of many across Spain in the summer of 1391, a mob attacked the Jewish community of Valencia, killing at least a hundred people and forcibly converting most of the rest. These attacks destroyed the Jewish communities of Valencia and many other cities in Spain, making 1391 a crucial turning point in both Spanish and Jewish history. The Valencian attack is particularly well recorded, with surviving accounts from multiple independent sources, all newly translated into English from the original Catalan and Valencian. These four accounts are from three different perspectives: the king’s brother, Prince Martí, senior royal official on the scene; that of the jurats, senior municipal officials in Valencia; and that of Juceff Abraim, a Valencian Jew who was forcibly converted during the assault. Each of these accounts reflects the different pressures the witnesses faced in constructing a narrative of the events. The unit is published in two versions: one with introduction and notes in Spanish, with the primary texts in the original medieval Valencian with modern Spanish translation, and another with the introduction and notes in English, and primary texts in original medieval Valencian and English translation. The original text was edited and translated into English by Abigail Agresta, then into Spanish by Sol Miguel-Prendes. The introduction and notes were written by Abigail Agresta and translated into Spanish by Sol Miguel-Prendes. Types of courses where the text might be useful: History (medieval, Jewish, Iberian), Religious Studies, Jewish Studies, Sephardic Studies. It is also a useful case study on bias in historical sources.Item Open Access Acrodynia(1925) Bilderback, J. This review aims to estimate effects of acupuncture on PTSD symptoms, depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms, and sleep quality for adults with PTSD. We searched 10 databases in January 2016 to identify eligible randomized controlled trials (RCTs). We performed random effects meta-analyses and examined quality of the body of evidence (QoE) using the GRADE approach to rate confidence in meta-analytic effect estimates. Seven RCTs with 709 participants met inclusion criteria. We identified very low QoE indicating significant differences favoring acupuncture (versus any comparator) at post-intervention on PTSD symptoms (standardized mean difference [SMD] = −0.80, 95% confidence interval [CI] [−1.59, −0.01], 6 RCTs), and low QoE at longer follow-up on PTSD (SMD = −0.46, 95% CI [−0.85, −0.06], 4 RCTs) and depressive symptoms (SMD = −0.56; 95% CI [−0.88, −0.23], 4 RCTs). No significant differences were observed between acupuncture and comparators at post-intervention for depressive symptoms (SMD = −0.58, 95% CI [−1.18, 0.01], 6 RCTs, very low QoE), anxiety symptoms (SMD = −0.82, 95% CI [−2.16, 0.53], 4 RCTs, very low QoE), and sleep quality (SMD = −0.46, 95% CI [−3.95, 3.03], 2 RCTs, low QoE). Safety data (7 RCTs) suggest little risk of serious adverse events, though some participants experienced minor/moderate pain, superficial bleeding, and hematoma at needle insertion sites. To increase confidence in findings, sufficiently powered replication trials are needed that measure all relevant clinical outcomes and dedicate study resources to minimizing participant attrition.Item Open Access Acute Intestinal Obstruction--Its Treatment(1929) Holden, W. It proposes a hypothetical as a basis for practicing the research process steps and encourages students and instructors to contribute other hypotheticals. The text also includes sample assignments, demonstration videos, and discussion and reflection questions, with opportunities for students and instructors to contribute additional questions. This text uses an approach that emphasizes student reflection on the development of research skills, with the benefit of repeated and consistent formative feedback.
