A Piece of Steak is a chamber opera in four scenes based on the Jack London short story of the same name. The piece is composed for five operatic soloists, a chorus, a voice actor, and a Pierrot ensemble with percussion, and is 25-30 minutes in duration. The libretto that I have written for this piece follows an aging boxer and his wife as he prepares for an important match for the future of his family. The characters in A Piece of Steak deal with issues related to poverty, family, and the broader sports culture and the treatment of athletes.en_US
