When compared to other piano concertos from the Romantic era, Brahms’s First Piano Concerto in D minor, Op. 15 is underrepresented on the performance stage perhaps because it is more difficult to interpret and avoids overt displays of virtuosity. This document aims to provide readers with a performance guide for Brahms’s Piano Concerto in D minor, Op. 15, with solutions for technically challenging passages based on personal experience and references to Brahms’s 51 Exercises, W! oO 6. This document consists of five chapters. Following an introduction to the document, Chapter One provides a brief overview of Brahms as a pianist and teacher, and the pianos that he encountered in his lifetime. Chapter Two offers a curated selection of the 51 Exercises and the application of these selections to the First Piano Concerto. An analysis of the concerto is provided in Chapter Three, followed by the performance guide in Chapter Four. Chapter Five offers readers some concluding remarks on the document.en_US
