Abstract
Cultural mapping has become a part of both the cultural planning and community
cultural development fields over the past decade. For the purposes of this research cultural
mapping is the process of identifying and stating, in a written or visual inventory, all cultural
assets within a specific geographic area. However, this tool is often overlooked in the research
and strategies for producing an effective map have only recently become part of the field. The
purpose of this study was to take a deeper look at the process of cultural mapping. I worked to
identify and define the practice of cultural mapping, examine the connections between cultural
mapping, community cultural development (CCD) and cultural planning and develop a body of
theoretical knowledge around the process of cultural mapping.
