This issue marks the final year for our three-year theme “Women and Work.” We are delighted to feature several articles that reflect this theme, including one by Lamia Karim, associate professor, Department of Anthropology, which focuses on the research for her current book project about female garment workers in Bangladesh. Another, by the research team of Alaí Reyes-Santos, associate professor in the recently renamed Department of Indigenous, Race, & Ethnic Studies, and Ana-Maurine Lara, assistant professor, Department of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, is about women healers in the Caribbean. Maria Fernanda Escallón, assistant professor, Department of Anthropology, reports on her CSWS-supported research, describing the invisibility of women in Colombia who sell fruit and traditional sweets in an area declared by UNESCO as Intangible Heritage of Humanity. Although one of the tourism industry’s most marketable characters in Cartagena’s historic city center, these Palenqueras earn little and are often harassed by police. Michelle McKinley and I interviewed Angela Joya, assistant professor, Department of International Studies, about her research projects in the Middle East and North Africa in the male-dominated field of political economy. And there are many more research articles by faculty members and graduate students whose research CSWS has supported through our research grant program, as well as news about upcoming events, previous events, honors, awards, and book publications.en_US
