dc.description.abstractExamining compounds through nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy allows scientific researchers to better understand the materials being used in not only a scientific setting, but in everyday life as well. One such compound that is analyzable through NMR is potassium permanganate, also known as KMnO4. This compound, while researched in other professional projects, is somewhat lacking in information due to many of these studies having occurred during the 1960s and 1970s, before the widespread use of computing. The theory would suggest that, by incrementally increasing the concentration of KMnO4 dissolved in a deionized water solution, the coupling between the protons in the compound to each other and the environment to increase. This increase in coupling indicates that the height of the resonance peak will increase then decrease and the width of the resonance peak will more gradually increase. The results derived from this research project suggest that this is the case.en_US
