dc.description.abstract | The structure of the verbal word in the Yahooskin-Northern Paiute language can be viewed as consisting of layers of functionally complicit morphology. Central to this structure is a semantic core, or STEM, which also participates in the lexical derivation of argument structure. Next is a layer of valence-altering morphology that functions systematically to manipulate argument structure at a syntactic level. This layer, constitutes the THEME portion of verbal structure. A variety of finite morphology occurs suffixally to this central, thematic portion of the Northern Paiute verb. | |
