dc.description.abstract | Industrialecologyexploreshowindustrialsystemscanfunctionmorelikenaturalecosystems.Industrialsymbiosisisasubfieldofindustrialecologyandaimstodevelopmutuallybeneficialscenariosfortheeconomyandtheenvironment.The purposeofthisstudyistoexplainhowindustrialsymbiosisnetworkscanbecreatedandimplementedsuccessfully. ThisstudyprovidesanarrativetodescribehowWillowLakeWaterPollutionControlFacility,onceafacilityonlyforthemanagementofwastewater,isnowamulti‐purposeassetforarangeoforganizationswithwastedisposalneeds.CentraltotheWillowLakenarrativeisaservice‐learningpartnershipbetweenCityofSalemandUniversityofOregon.Thenarrativewasdevelopedwitheightinterviewsandsupportingdocuments. Thestudyconcludeswithrecommendationsforuniversities,cities,andstategovernments.Recommendationsinclude:Stategovernmentsshouldprovidefundingforcitiesinterestedinservice‐learningpartnerships;economic developmentdepartmentsshoulduseaninventoryingprocess;economic developmentdepartmentsthatuseaninventoryingprocessshouldassesstheirabilitytofunctionasthirdpartyfacilitators;SustainableCityYearProgram(SCYP) andotheruniversitiesengagedinservice‐learningprogramsshouldsuggestindustrialsymbiosisprojectstopartnercities;andindustrialsymbiosispartners shouldstaycurrentwithchanging economicvaluesofmaterialsexchangedintheir network. | en_US |
