Abstract
The goal of this master's project was to investigate the dynamic relationship between sustainability and museum administration in order to define what it might mean for a museum and its exhibitions to be green. Through an extensive literature review and three case studies of leading green museums, I set out to understand how sustainability might be integrated into museums, how the roles and characteristics of museums defined their role in a sustainable society, how exhibits could communicate sustainability to museum visitors, and how to produce exhibitions using green design. The findings of this master's research project informed a set of recommendations that provide practical instruction for museums, or any other arts or cultural organizations, to consider while developing green exhibits.
