Asian/Asian American men report higher levels of body image concerns relative to their ethnic peers. One potential reason may be due to experiences with racism, which are associated with disordered eating symptoms. No studies to date have investigated if experiences with racism are associated with body dissatisfaction in this population. We hypothesized that experiences with racism would be positively associated with Asian/Asian American men’s body image concerns, and that ethnic identity commitment and exploration would buffer these associations. Participants (266 Asian/Asian American men; Mage=24.4±3.6y) completed an online survey that measured demographics; experiences with racism and microaggressions; ethnic identity commitment and exploration; and muscularity and body fat concerns. After adjusting for body mass index, income, education, and presence of a psychiatric diagnosis, linear regression models indicated that both experiences with racism and microaggressions were significantly and positively associated with concerns with muscularity and body fat, B’s = 1.32-1.19, p’s<. 05. Ethnic identity commitment buffered the link between experiences with microaggressions and concerns with muscularity (B = -1.22, p<.05). Our data suggest that experiences with racism are negatively associated with body image in Asian/Asian American men, and that a greater ethnic identity commitment may serve as a protective factor. Prospective data are needed to clarify these associations.en_US
