Abstract

This thesis focuses on three case studies of l 920s fantasy architecture movie palaces in three distinct Oregon communities. Typical characteristics of movie palaces are presented as well as discussion of the national trends in movie palace rehabilitation. A historical overview of the movie palace phenomenon provides an understanding for the evolution of each case study. Specifics to each case study focus on its past and present relationship to its community as well as present crucial issues. The conclusion provides comparisons between the theaters as the work of one architect, Lee Thomas, as well as providing suggestions for the revitalization of movie palaces, specifically in terms of continued movie projection.
