This thesis examines the ways in which the fossil fuel industry attempts to manage conflict by projecting an image of corporate responsibility to gain access to resources for expansion. Examining the discourse of corporate public relations messaging for proposed liquefied natural gas (LNG) infrastructure and state government responses, this research analyzes the local impacts of this discourse which draws on the rhetoric of globalization and market-based solutions to climate change. In addition, this research displays the ways in which communities and activists are working to re-frame the discussion of climate change solutions, re-framing fossil fuels within a life-cycle global context. This takes into account not only use but production, extraction and distribution, which supports organizing for community-based solutions.en
