In this paper, we review the literature to shed light on the social dynamics associated with the utilization of woody biomass generated from forests managed for timber products and other social and ecological values. Our aim is to organize the literature on social issues related to woody biomass utilization activities associated with forest management according to common themes and to identify key gaps in the knowledge structure that require additional research. Although our perspective specifically concentrates on the woody biomass utilization in the United States, we recognize that many regions internationally are working to utilize woody biomass using similar applications and that other biomass applications and forest management literature may provide insight into the social issues associated with woody biomass utilization. Therefore, we include literature from a range of substantive fields and geographic origins.en_US
