After a galloping first-half in whic h both teams ran themselves ragged wit h the fast-break type of ball advocate d by Hobson and Edrnundson, the Ore- gons faced the second half on the shor t end of a 27-24 score . The Webfoot s had crept up from a 22-14 advantag e the Huskies held for a short time . The first four minutes and ten sec- onds of the second half found th e spectators unable to keep up with th e play, as 21 points were scored in tha t time. The Oregon boys collected 13 o f these against 8 for Washington , From then on it was all Oregon an d the final score was Oregon 57, Wash- ington 49 . Gale led the scoring with 1 6 points, followed closely by Dick an d Wintennute, who collected 14 point s apiece . The team enters the final series o f two games with Washington at Seattle . needing only one win to cop the title . Conference standings are : W L Pct. Last year, the big forward fro m Oakridge, topped all Pacific coas t scorers with 408 points for the sea - son, set a 20-game conference top o f 249 points, and in doing so erased ex - OSC Wally Pahnberk 's 16-game con- ference total of 187 points . In 16 games last year, Gale mad e 189 points in 14 games and 193 in 1 6 to break Palmberg's mark . But on a technicality, many basket - ball experts of the northwest refus e to accept his record . They declare tha t because Montana, a team which man - aged to beat the championship Duck s once, was included in the conferenc e and the schedule lengthened to 2 0 games, his mark shouldn 't stand . Coach Howard Hobson isn't of tha t opinion . In fact, Coach Hobson vehe- mently points out that the additio n of Montana just made the going tha t much tougher because of more game s and a long road trip into a high-alti- tude territory at Butte, Montana . Th e high altitude always bothers visitin g athletes . As for Gale himself, he isn 't worried . He 's hot on the pace that will take hi m to an 'official" 16-game record . At th e conclusion of the Idaho series in Eu- gene, February 10 and 11, Gale ha d boosted his total to 149 points, just 3 9 short of a new mark . In his remain- ing four games, he will have to aver - age 10 points to surpass it . Big Slim Wintermute, rated by con- ference clubs as the "nearest thing t o basketball perfection," trails Gale i n the scoring column . With four game s to go, Wintermute has 128 points, an d must shoot at a 15/-points-per-gam e pace to also beat the record . Both Gale and Wintermute are fa r ahead of the field, and can hardly b e boosted out of their 1-2 positions . Roy Williamson, Washington sharp - shooter, is the nearest challenger t o Oregon supremacy in the scorin g standings . In the first 10 games h e has scored 93 points . There is one basketball subjec t which Coach Howard Hobson woul d just rather not talk about . That subject is "championship," es- pecially when it concerns his Ducks , who lead the northern division titl e chase at the three-quarter post with 11 wins and only one setback . Washing - ton, in second place . has 7 wins and 3 defeats . Coach Hobson has seen other bal l clubs fold up in the "home stretch ." And not until the Ducks are actuall y "in" mathematically does he want an y part of that pennant . But nevertheless, Athletic Manage r Anse Cornell has been besieged wit h ticket reservations from fans who ar e confident that the Ducks will he in th e playoffs come March 11, 12, and 13 . The playoffs will be in the northwes t [6 1 February 193 9 ti ith the northern division winners th e hosts . George Varoff, crack pole vaulter , and Nieman Storli, northern divisio n half-mile champion, will represent Ore- gon at the Golden Gate World's fai rinvitational track meet and Pacifi c coast indoor championships which wil l be held February 25 and March 4 o n San Francisco's Treasure Island . Varoff, whose indoor record of 1 4 feet 4% riches was broken Februar y 11 lw Cornelius Warmerdam at th e Boston Gardens, will be trying to re - gain his laurels in his first competitio n of the year . In workouts this month , Varoff has bettered 13 feet 6 inches . Storli will run in a special 600-yar d invitational race . Oregon's remarkable swimming du e -Tack Dallas and Sherman Wetmor e -will soon have to be looking for ne w worlds to conquer . In their first varsity campaign, th e two Long Beach, Cal ., mermen hav e established new coast records wit h about as much concern as Bobby Jone s would show playing a Sunday duffer . But while this matter of record - breaking has "all been in a day 's swim .' to Wetmore and Dallas in nearly tw o years of splashing at the University , it was not until Saturday, Februar y 11, that one of their marks was en- tered in the coast official files . Last year, new records fairly (trippe d from the efforts of Backstrokes Wet - more and 13reaststroker Dallas . Bu t because they were freshmen, the mark s didn't count . And this year, the tw o boys have "shoved off" four times , cracking records every time . Techni- calities and exhibitions deprived Coac h Ned John's aces of records the firs t three times, but the fourth paid divi- dends . Swimming against the best natator s of the University of Washington, Wet - more was clocked in 1 :39.8 second s for the 150 yard backstroke . The ol d coast mark, held by Park of USC, wa s 1 :40.1. Dallas was even more impressive . Ile clipped 10 .1 seconds off the 200 - yard breast stroke mark held by Town e of Stanford . Dallas ' time was 3 :26.6. Then, just to make their afternoo n complete . Wetmore and Dallas teame d with Pierce Mallory, free-styler, t o set a new coast mark of 3 :03.2, fiv e seconds faster than the old time, in th e 300-yard medley relay event . Although t h e Webfoots cracke d three marks, they lost the meet to th e Huskies by a 43-to-32 count whe n Washington 's Bockrnan beat Oregon 's Tom Starbuck by inches in the finis h of the free-style relay . When jack Dallas came up fro m Long Beach to do his swimming fo r the University of Oregon, he intro- duced a new "butterfly " stroke t o northwest swimmers . Previously, swimmers in the north - ern division, all used the orthodo x breast stroke-an underwater "frog " stroke . Dallas ' succes with the "butterfly, " which is an overhand breast stroke , caused breast strokers in the north t o adopt this style . Dallas, himself, tutored Ralph Laf- ferty, Oregon 's 1937 champion, a s well as other Oregon swimmers . But one thing other northwest swim- mers haven 't been able to find out , from Dallas or anyone else, is how t o keep up with Jack Dallas . Raj Edits Indian Hom e In 1935, a serious Indian youth wh o already possessed a B .S. in agricultura l science from the University of Minne - sota presented his thesis for a Maste r of Arts degree in journalism . Kumma r Sri Mohan V . Raj proposed in hi s thesis to return to India and establis h an English language farm and hom e magazine for the natives "to assist i n the regeneration of the masses of India , to introduce improved scientific meth- ods of agriculture and to innovate i n the management of homes by present- ing material, in a simple, popular, an d appealing manner ." This seemed like a pretty large or - der because it meant that "Raj " wa s going to be bucking the "vested inter- ests" who must come through with th e advertising to make his strugglin g magazine a going concern . But he ha s done It .The second anniversary edition o f The Indian Ifome has been receive d by the school of journalism . The edi- tion contains 64 pages of interestin g material and has a four-color cover . The editor has stuck to his purpose an d has a now firmly established magazine . Known simply as Mohan V . Raj , the young Indian was a popular campu s figure . He was a member of Sigm aDelta Chi, professional journalism fra- ternity, and acted as Oregon corre- spondent to its magazine . He als o served as night editor on the Emeral d for some time . Alumna Writes Best Story "Address Unknown, " a short stor y that sold out the entire issue of a maga- zine within several days, is the work o f Katherine Kressman Taylor, '24 . Th e story deals with the friendship of tw o partners in a San Francisco art firm , one German and the other Jewish . The whole story is an exchange o f letters between the two -men when th e German partner goes to Nazi Germany . The German had been engaged to hi s partner 's sister, but he renounces he r in Germany when she is hounded b y storm troopers as non-Aryan . "Thevengeance upon him is stark and beau- tiful in its simplicity ." The piece first appeared in Story magazine and was reprinted in Reader s Digest (which is, incidentally, edite d by a former Oregon Woman, Lila Bel l Acheson Wallace, '17, and her hus- band, De Witt Wallace) . The story ha s now appeared in book form . Katherine Kressman attended th e school of journalism at the Universit y and did her major work in short stor y writing .
