UNIVERSITY OF OREGON REGISTER OF STUDENTS EUGENE CAMPUS 1876-1906 UNIVERSITY OF OREGON REGISTER OF STUDENTS EUGE;-';E CA~PUS From the organization of the first cla5ses on October 16, 1876, through the academic year ending on June 30, 1906 COMPILED BY CLIFFORD L. CONSTANCE ASSISTANT REGISTRAR Foreword This Register was compiled because student records for the first thirty years of the University of Oregon are either nonexistent, or fragmentary and unreliable. At this late date it will be forever impossible to state certainly the academic work done by students of this period, but in this Register is assembled a summary of all the information available in such records as do exist. Since no previous statistics of student enrollment for this period are consistent or trustworthy, those derived from this Register will be considered authorita- tive henceforth. Sources for Names. In the main, lists printed in the annual Catalogs seem to be the most accurate source for the names of students registered during each year; since this was the principal institutional publication, considerable care evidently was used, and that often by the President or under his supervision. A supplementary and equally reliable volume, for a brief period, is the handwritten volume (kept by President John W. Johnson) now bound and titled "U. of O. Students, 1876-1886." For this Register, names have been included if they were found in Catalogs or in the volume just described, or in fee ledgers or cash books dated 1879 to 1896 and 1898 to 1906, or in the Regents' records for the interval 1896 t.:l 1898, or on students' registration cards after 1899. A few additional names have been found in these latter sources, and this partial positive evidence of enrollment has been accepted. The Catalog has been followed in regard to classification (Preparatory or Collegiate, and the like), even when not self-consistent. Other lists and references, authentic only to the extent of deciding discrepancies and whether a person was man or woman, were found in records of the Regents, the Faculty, the Business Office, and in campus magazines and papers and yearbooks. Student Records. The earliest student records showing courses and grades are in two large, leather-bound blank books with printed course-title headings for the columns and with student names listed down the page, but lacking dates of enrollment; these were kept by Pro- fessor George H. ColIier, "Recorder of the Faculty" under President Johnson. Referred to as (a) and (b) in this Register, these are: (a) "Record of Standing of Students," containing entries from about 1880 to 1893; (b) "Record" (in Preparatory courses only) , with entries from about 1888 to 1893 (the pages for names beginning with "A" and "B" have been removed from the book and are missing). The next form of student records consists of several types of stiff cards, covering the period 1893 to 1906. Apparently these were started by President Charles H. Chapman when he came in 1893 and were continued under President Frank Strong in 1899 and President Prince L. Campbell in 1902. President Chapman must have taken over the recorder's duties, for in his first report to the Regents he requested clerical aid for this purpose; this aid was authorized in February 1896, and he hired W. Hyde Stalker, a student, who on grade sheets for 1896-97 signed himself "Registrar." Actually the first official Registrar was Camilla Leach who was Librarian and Registrar from 1897 to 1900; later Nanna P. Paddock was Registrar and Secretary to President Strong from 1900 to 1902, John Arthur Gamber was Registrar and Secretary to President Campbell from 1902 to 1905, and Albert R. Tiffany became simply Registrar in 1905. These record cards, referred to as (c) in this Register, may be explained as follows: (c) Record cards for individual students, showing dates and courses (at first by code numbers) and grades; on cards with printed dates the written entries seem to be (iii) correct, while marginal dates are to be interpreted as 95=1895-96, 97=1896-97, 98=1897-98, etc.; on later cards, 1900=1899-1900, etc. The last of these record cards developed into record sheets of similar form, filed in binders. Referred to as (d) in this Register, these are: (d) Record sheets for individual students, showing dates and course titles and grades, found occasionally before 1906 and becoming universal in 1906-07. The earliest supporting original records are instructors' grade sheets beginning in 1896-97, and students' registration cards beginning in 1899-1900. Music students are found only in Catalog lists with one remarkable exception-in 1895- 96 they were left out of the Catalog but were listed in the Regents'records. Institutional Organization. From 1876 to 1904 the University included a Preparatory Department, also called at various times the Sub-Freshman Class and the University Acad- emy. The Collegiate Department was also organized in 1876, and continued under that name and as the College of Letters untii (February) 1900, when the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts was established. During the period 1876 to 1896 there were Classical and Scien- tific and Literary courses leading to degrees, and Normal and English and Business short courses leading to certificates. From 1896 to 1900 departmental majors were authorized in- stead of fixed curricula; from 1900 to 1905 there were prescribed curricula again (Classical, Literary, Scientific, Civic-Historical, Philosophical-Educational) ; and in 1905 departmental majors returned. Work in mines and engineering was added in 1896. From 1900 to 1905 it is impossible to distinguish enrollments within the so-called Academic Colleges (the College of Literature, Science, and. the Arts, the College of Science and Engineering, and the School of Mines and Mining). In 1905 these were consolidated into the clearly distinguished College of Literature, Science, and the Arts and the College of Engineering. Work in Music was first offered in 1885, but this branch was usually and correctly called a "Conservatory;" graduates of this course were entitled to a certificate of that fact (the occasional reference to "Bachelor of Music" during this period is definitely inadvertenI). The Law School in Portland was founded in 1884, the Medical School in Portland in 1887. The Graduate School was set up in 1900, as distinct from the so-called Academic Colleges. The first Summer School was held in 1901, with no other before 1906. Excluded Data. The Catalog issued in 1894 describes "University Extension," and similar material continues until 1904; in 1896 and 1901 "Extension" students are listed. Actually this work was a quite unofficial enterprise of President Chapman and his succes- sors, beginning with lecture series given primarily to advertise the University; by 1896 a "correspondence course" was announced, in which students could enroll at the cost of five stamps and receive an outline of study and suggested questions. In the Catalog published in 1900 it is stated that individuals could be enrolled as "Attendants upon Extension Courses" and could receive certificates of work done, but they would not be entitled to University credit until they took special examinations on the campus. There is no record that the Board of Regents authorized any extension work for credit until after 1906; these early "Exten- sion" activities are therefore classified as promotional rather than scholastic and hence not appropriate in this Register. The Catalogs mention the "Oregon Summer School," held at Gearhart Park in 1895 and 1896; President Chapman was "President of the Oregon Summer School," and the faculty contained some from the University faculty, but it distinctly was not an official University of Oregon enterprise and therefore its students are not included here. The Catalog dated 1897 contains a page advertising the Eugene Divinity School>, but of course that institution has never had an official connection with the University. This Reg- ister does not include students of the Law and Medical Schools, since it deals only with the Eugene campus. (iv) Symbols and Abbrevations.
