Thanks to recent giffts from two couples who are longtifme unifversifty and lifbrary supporters?Rifchard and Mary Corrifgan Solarif and Dave and Nancy Petrone?lifbrary users wifll experifence greatly ifmproved access to materifals ifn both the archifves and the MAP collectifon. RICHARD AND MARY CORRIGfAN SOLARI Mary Corrifgan Solarif and her husband Rifchard are well known ifn the UO communifty. Mary, who graduated from Oregon ifn 1946, was an actifve student leader throughout much of her tifme at the unifversifty; as a senifor she was presifdent of the campus YWCA, secretary of the Mortar Board, and cofounder of the Women?s Coordifnatifng Councifl. She and Rifchard, a retifred executifve wifth Granifte Constructifon Company ifn Watsonviflle, Califfornifa, have stayed ifn close touch wifth theifr frifends at the unifversifty sifnce her graduatifon. In fact, the famifly?s connectifon to the unifversifty has grown even stronger after one of the couple?s grandsons graduated from the UO ifn sprifng 2004. The Solarifs? recent gifft of $1.4 mifllifon has created an endow- ment to support the Rifchard and Mary Corrifgan Solarif Unifversifty Hifstorifan and Archifvifst posiftifon ifn the lifbrary. In addiftifon, they supported the Knifght Lifbrary expansifon project ifn the late 1980s, created an endowment to support ifnformatifon technology and teachifng ifn 1995, establifshed a faculty fellowshifp for lifbrary staff members ifn 1999, and funded an endowment to support lifbrary ifnstructifonal servifces ifn 2001. In endowifng the hifstorifan- archifvifst posiftifon, the Solarifs have helped open the doors to one of the unifversifty?s treasures. Unifversifty Archifves ifs the officifal reposiftory of unifversifty records datifng back to 1873. The materifals ifn the archifves currently occupy more than 19,000 lifnear feet of space and more than 12,000 boxes, ifncludifng paper records, unifversifty publifcatifons, student theses and difssertatifons, photographs and negatifves, audifotapes, films, and general memorabiflifa. The heavifly used Unifversifty Archifves ifs the sifngle most ifmportant source for documentifng and ifnterpretifng the unifversifty?s rifch hifstorifcal and cultural heriftage. Heather Brifston, who has been named the Rifchard and Mary Corrifgan Solarif Unifversifty Hifstorifan and Archifvifst, says, ?The Solarif endowment creates an opportu- nifty to fulfill the lifbrary?s vifsifon of what the archifves should be. I?m honored and excifted to be able to contrifbute to that effort.? DAVE AND NANCY PETRONE In announcifng Dave and Nancy Petrone?s $2.5 mifllifon gifft for five diffferent unifversifty ifniftifatifves, ifncludifng the endowment of the lifbrary?s MAP/GIS faculty posiftifon, NANCY AND DAVE PETRONE?S GIFT ENDOWED A MAP/GIS LIBRARIAN POSITION. HEATHER BRISTON, CENTER, ENJOYS A MOMENT WITH RICHARD AND MARY CORRIGAN SOLARI. LIBRARY SNTEUNIVERSITY OF OREGON EDITION XIX: WINTER 2005 FROM THE DESK OF THE UfNIVERSITY LIBRARIAN At the UO Lifbrarifes, we con- well we?re doifng ifn makifng use of our consifderable organifzatifonal assets, not the least of whifch ifs our strong base of lifbrary supporters. Each ifssue of Library Notes offers examples of what we?ve done recently to leverage the support we receifve to expand access to resources, buifld our prifnt and difgiftal collectifons, and ifmprove the qualifty of research and ifnstructifon at the unifversifty. The lifbrary?s other organifzatifonal assets are ifmportant, too. Here are a few that deserve specifal mentifon. ? Knowledge management skills gifve us the abiflifty to provifde relifable long-term access to ifnformatifon ifn a varifety of formats, not just books and journals. Our goal ifs to manage ifnformatifon so that our users can access ift for the full range of research and ifnstructifonal purposes. ? Educational and information technology ifs a key asset that provifdes students and faculty members wifth access to state-of-the-art equifpment, software, and technology traifnifng. Informatifon technology has changed the face of hifgher educatifon, and the lifbrary staff uses ifts expertifse ifn thifs area to help the unifversifty maifntaifn ifts competiftifve edge ifn delifverifng a hifgh-qualifty educatifon to ifts students. ? Commitment to teaching ifs reflected ifn many of the lifbrary?s programs. Our lifbrarifans play a central role ifn strengthenifng the teachifng and learnifng process on campus by offerifng courses, workshops, ifndifvifdual consultatifons, and faculty traifnifng opportuniftifes. The lifbrary ifs also home to several technology-rifch studifos and classrooms, whifch are used by ifnstructors ifn all difscifplifnes. ? Trust accrues over tifme. By provifdifng relifable access to authoriftatifve sources of ifnformatifon and by offerifng the unparalleled expertifse of our lifbrarifans ifn navifgatifng the global network envifronment, the lifbrary has earned the respect and trust of the many thousands of UO students, faculty members, and members of the general publifc who use our facifliftifes. ? Collaborative relationships between the lifbrary and other campus unifts, as well as wifth other colleges and unifversiftifes, have valuable outcomes for everyone. Resource-sharifng programs and resource-buifldifng projects have become an essentifal component ifn ifmprovifng access and ifn creatifng and payifng for new ifnformatifon resources. These assets have developed from a solifd foundaton of lifbrary support. Wifth your assifstance, we wifll contifnue to fulfill the lifbrary?s central mifssifon: To enrifch the student learnifng experifence, encourage exploratifon and research at all levels, and contrifbute to advancements ifn access to scholarly resources. Deborah Af. Carver Philip H. Knight University Librarian Endowments continued from front pafge UO presifdent Dave Frohnmayer saifd the Petrones ?personiffy generosifty and vifsifon.? Theifr generosifty has extended far beyond theifr financifal support, however. Dave Petrone, who graduated from the unifversifty ifn 1966 wifth an economifcs degree and went on to earn hifs M.B.A. ifn 1968, was volunteer chaifr of the unifversifty?s previfous fundraifsifng campaifgn. He has also served on the UO Foundatifon Board of Trustees sifnce 1991 and ifs a member of the Campaifgn Leadershifp Councifl for the unifversifty?s current fundraifsifng effort, Campaifgn Oregon: Transformifng Lifves. Petrone, chaifrman of Housifng Capiftal Company ifn San Mateo, Califfornifa, says he and Nancy were motifvated to make theifr gifft ?by our admifratifon for the Unifversifty of Oregon, ifts leaders, faculty members, and volunteers, and by our desifre to promote qualifty academifc programs.? The tifmifng of the Petrone gifft was ifdeal. In the past few years, the lifbrary?s MAP collectifon has grown to become the fourth largest ifn the U.S. and Canada. It ifncludes approxifmately 400,000 maps, more than 500,000 aerifal photographs, 4,000 atlases and reference books, and numerous Geographifc Informatifon System (GIS) datasets. GIS technology has revolutifonifzed research ifn many fields, makifng ift possifble to difgiftally gather, analyze, and present geographifc ifnformatifon. The system software and support has become a criftifcal component ifn the lifbrary?s servifce to a growifng number of students and faculty who use GIS ifn theifr classes and research. The Petrone?s endowment wifll allow the lifbrary to hifre an expert ifn cartography and Geographifc Informatifon Systems to manage, expand, and ifmprove access to the lifbrary?s MAP collectifon. The posiftifon ifs expected to be filled by early 2005. ?Extreme Makeover? Brightens Knight Library Frifday, March 26, 2004, was Lifbrarifes. Fifnals week of wifnter term had just ended, and most students and faculty members had left campus to enjoy sprifng break. Wifth so many lifbrary users out of town, ift seemed lifke a good tifme to put a brifghter face on some of the more heavifly used areas of Knifght Lifbrary. The call went out to lifbrary staff for volunteers who were wifllifng to stop dealifng wifth books and computers for a whifle and ifnstead pifck up mops, brooms, paifnt brushes, and polifshifng rags for a day of good, old-fashifoned sprifng cleanifng. More than eifghty volunteers answered the call?and thus began the first-ever Lifbrary Day. In 1994, major renovatifons to Knifght Lifbrary were completed ifn antifcifpatifon of ifncreasifngly heavy use by UO students, faculty, and communifty users as well as by vifsiftors from across the globe. But after a decade of heavy foot traffic and general use, a number of other areas needed a general face-lifft. To counter the effects of wear and tear, lifbrary staffers and dozens of ifndifvifduals from other campus unifts, ifncludifng the UO?s Faciflifty Servifces, volunteered to gifve Knifght Lifbrary some of the TLC ift needed. Staff members applifed fresh coats of paifnt to the walls, washed wifndows, and cleaned computers and termifnal screens. The steps and entryways to the lifbrary were gifven a thorough power washifng. New carpet was laifd ifn the reference area, and new tifle replaced the worn areas on the floors ifn the lifbrary?s Instructifonal Technology Center, Copy Center, and several sifde halls. New furnifture, funded through the generosifty of UO alumnif and frifends, replaced the well-worn tables and chaifrs ifn varifous locatifons on the second, thifrd, and fourth floors. The ornate wood fa?ade at the lifbrary?s cifrculatifon desk was also restaifned and repolifshed. Phiflifp H. Knifght Unifversifty Lifbrarifan Deborah Carver saifd the turnout and support for the event reflects campus and com- munifty prifde ifn the lifbrary as a central campus gatherifng poifnt for study and research: ?The work done on Lifbrary Day demonstrates the lifbrary?s commift- ment to provifdifng a pleasant, comfor- table envifronment ifn whifch students, faculty, and others can carry out theifr studifes. We expect Lifbrary Day to become an annual event that supports our goal of keepifng our facifliftifes attractifve and user frifendly.? LIBRARY STAFF MEMBERS CLEANED, POLISHED, AND PAINTED AT THE FIRST ANNUAL LIBRARY DAY. Afcademics, Afthletics, and the Library?Af Winning Combination Dave Taylor ?78 was a four-tifme All-Amerifcan member of the 1973 and 1974 NCAA natifonal champifon cross-country teams. Dave, a retifred Nifke executifve, and hifs wiffe Terry are now contifnuifng a wifnnifng tradiftifon by supportifng the UO Lifbrarifes ifn developifng a new difgiftal collectifon on UO sports hifstory. Athletifcs at the UO has a rifch and storifed past. Much of thifs past ifs preserved ifn the lifbrary?s Specifal Collectifons and Unifversifty Archifves, where thousands of photographs and other iftems datifng from the early 1890s to the present document the achifevements of legendary track-and-field ifcons lifke Bifll Bowerman and Steve Prefontaifne and basketball greats lifke the Tall Fifrs team of 1939. The materifal also captures proud moments ifn the hifstory of UO football?lifke the 1917 Rose Bowl vifctory?as well as other sports. These vifsual depifctifons, along wifth extensifve textual descrifptifons, vifdeotapes, and audifotapes, ifllustrate the evolutifon of the UO athletifc program and the role collegifate sports has played at the unifversifty. In the past, these unifque materifals were only avaiflable to researchers who physifcally traveled to or called the lifbrary?s secure readifng room to request them. Addiftifonally, many of the ifmages exifsted only as negatifves, makifng them diffficult for patrons to vifew. The Taylors? gifft to the lifbrary wifll help remedy these diffficultifes. The gifft wifll be used to difgiftifze photographs and create new contact prifnts wifth accompanyifng difgiftal scans. Prifnt documents wifll also be scanned for ifnclusifon ifn the new difgiftal collectifon. Onlifne delifvery of these materifals wifll allow anyone ifnterested ifn UO sports hifstory to use theifr home computers to enjoy an ?armchaifr? tour of UO athletifcs and to delve more deeply ifnto the rifch hifstory and growth of the program. Onlifne access wifll also stifmulate cross-difscifplifnary research across campus?for example, ifn sports marketifng, hifstory of photography, human physifology, and socifology. ?The UO provifded me wifth a great overall experifence,? Taylor says. ?The difscifplifne and challenge of the academifcs coupled wifth the competiftifveness and teamwork of the athletifcs enabled me to develop skiflls that have been ifnvaluable ifn both my professifonal and personal liffe. Plus, I met Terry whifle attendifng the UO.? After graduatifng, Taylor worked a part-tifme job for Nifke?s Eugene retaifl store. ?It was an ifncredifbly exciftifng tifme of rapifd growth for Nifke, and the opportuniftifes for job advancement were tremendous.? The part- tifme job led to a varifety of productifon and management posiftifons ifn New Hampshifre, the Phiflifppifnes, Taifwan, and the Beaverton headquarters. Dave retifred from Nifke as a senifor executifve ifn 1999, and he and Terry now splift theifr tifme between theifr home ifn Beaverton and travelifng around the U.S. ifn theifr motor home. In 1993 Taylor started an annual fundraifser for the track-and-field program wifth a small group of alumnif and frifends known as the Lame Ducks. ?If you know any of us, the name fits,? Taylor says wifth a laugh. However, the Lame Ducks are hardly lame when ift comes to supportifng the unifversifty. From humble begifnnifngs, the fundraifsifng effort has now contrifbuted nearly $1 mifllifon to the UO track-and- field program. But the Taylors also wanted to contrifbute to Oregon academifcs. For the UO Lifbrarifes, they have gifven giffts to refurbifsh lifbrary study rooms and purchase new computer equifpment. ?We belifeve ift ifs ifmportant to support academifcs at the UO as well as athletifcs, and supportifng the lifbrary helps benefit the entifre UO communifty,? explaifns Taylor. DAVE AND TERRY TAYLOR WITH THEIR DAUGHTER LISA. ?We believe it is impfortant to supfpfort academics at the UO as well as athletics, and supfpforting the library helpfs benefit the entire UO community.? CORRIGAN-SOLARI FELLOWSHIP WINNERS ANNOUfNCED Two UO lifbrarifans deeply ifnvolved ifn emergifng tifons and electronifc catalogifng have been named as recifpifents of the 2004 Rifchard and Mary Corrifgan Solarif Faculty Fellowshifp Award. Carol Hifxson, head of Metadata and Difgiftal Lifbrary Servifces (MDLS), and Lorif Robare, catalog lifbrarifan and assifstant head of MDLS, were recently named as the award wifnners. The Corrifgan-Solarif Faculty Fellowshifp Award ifs gifven each year by the UO Lifbrarifes to honor deservifng lifbrary faculty members for theifr noteworthy contrifbutifons to the unifversifty, the regifon, and the ifnter- natifonal communifty of scholars. Funded by a gifft from Rifchard and Mary Corrifgan Solarif, the award ifncludes $3,000 ifn support of each recifpifent?s contifnued professifonal development. CAROL HIXSON The lifbrary?s Grants and Awards Commifttee, whose members made the award selectifons based on nomif- natifng letters, praifsed Hifxson for her servifce to the unifversifty communifty as well as for her sifgnifficant contrifbutifons to the lifbrary professifon. Those nom- ifnatifng Hifxson descrifbed her as a model of a twenty- first century lifbrarifan who represents the ?best ifn team buifldifng and barrifer demolifshifng.? Begifnnifng ifn 2002, she oversaw the reorganifzatifon of the lifbrary?s Catalog Department ifnto what has become Metadata and Difgiftal Lifbrary Servifces, ifncreasifng productifvifty, expandifng servifces, and helpifng establifsh the UO Lifbrarifes as a leader among research lifbrarifes ifn buifldifng difgiftal collectifons. Under Hifxson?s charge, MDLS has played a central role ifn ifniftifatifng and developifng numerous cross- departmental projects at the unifversifty, as well as collaboratifve projects ifnvolvifng dozens of other lifbrarifes at colleges and unifversiftifes throughout the regifon. Two of the most notable difgiftal collectifons developed under Hifxson?s guifdance are Scholars? Bank, a difgiftal reposiftory for results of research conducted at Oregon, and the UO?s contrifbutifons to the Western Waters Difgiftal Lifbrary, an onlifne collectifon of hifstorifcal and contemporary resources focused on the Columbifa Rifver Basifn. Hifxson?s ifnvolvement ifn another difgiftal collectifon? Pifcturifng the Cayuse, Walla Walla, and Umatiflla Trifbes?demonstrates her skiflls at devifsifng systems that use technology not only to delifver ifnformatifon but also to make the ifnformatifon more accurate and useful. A collaboratifon between the UO Lifbrarifes and the Tam?stslifkt Cultural Instiftute (TCI) of the Confederated Trifbes of the Umatiflla Indifan Reservatifon, the project ifnvolved difgiftifzifng hundreds of hifstorifcal photographs wifth culturally sensiftifve trifbal content and delifverifng them to TCI ifn such a way that trifbal members, rather than outsifders, could provifde first-hand commentary on the ifndifvifduals and events portrayed ifn the photos. Malifssa Mifnthorn, TCI?s lifbrary and archifves manager, sums up the value of Hifxson?s ifnvolvement ifn the project: ?More often than not, others ifnaccurately contextualifze the ifmages speciffic to the Confederated Trifbes. Wifth Carol?s leadershifp, thifs project has facifl- iftated the creatifon of new contexts, ifnterpretatifons, and cultural understandifng of the hifstory, events, and people of the Umatiflla Trifbe and Columbifa Plateau regifon of the State of Oregon.? LORI ROBARE In more than ten years of servifce to the UO Lifbrarifes, Lorif Robare has difstifnguifshed herself as a skiflled and dedifcated lifbrarifan, a knowledgeable and temperate colleague, and a creatifve and dependable collaborator. One example of Robare?s many contrifbutifons to the lifbrary and the regifon ifs the leadershifp roll she played ifn the Data for Local Communiftifes project, whifch culmifnated ifn the creatifon of a database of web-based statifstifcal and descrifptifve ifnformatifon about local LORI ROBARE, LEFT, AND CAROL HIXSON, WINNERS OF THE 2004 CORRIGAN-SOLARI LIBRARY FACULTY FELLOWSHIP AWARD. continued on next pafge Digital Collections and Websites Expand Giffts to the UO Lifbrarifes and grants from prifvate and publifc rapifdly than would otherwifse be the case. Thifs ifs especifally true ifn the realm of websifte and difgiftal collectifons, where the preparatifon process ifs tifme ifntensifve. For example, difgiftal projects typifcally requifre lifbrary staff members to develop efficifent scannifng processes, buifld complex ifnformatifon delifvery systems, and desifgn hifghly functifonal presentatifon formats for each collectifon. Thanks to several generous giffts and prestifgifous grant awards, the lifbrary has been able to dramatifcally ifncrease the sifze and number of difgiftal resources ift offers. The rapifd growth ifn difgiftal collectifons has already radifcally changed the way lifbrarifes ifnteract wifth theifr users and has revolutifonifzed the use of materifals that were once diffficult to locate and costly to access. The followifng difgiftal collectifons, websiftes, and other resources have been developed by the lifbrary thanks to external fundifng. PICTURINGf THE CAYUSE, WALLA WALLA, AND UMATILLA TRIBES Thifs collaboratifve project ifnvolves the Tam?stslifkt Cultural Instiftute of the Confederated Trifbes of the Umatiflla Indifan Reservatifon, the UO Lifbrarifes, and the Western Interstate Commifssifon for Hifgher Educatifon. The project?s goal ifs twofold: first, to make avaiflable to a wifde audifence the Major Lee Moorhouse photographs of natifve peoples; and second, to provifde a sifte for hifstorifcal descrifptifons of these ifmages as well as descrifptifons created by natifve peoples. Partial funding provided by the Northwest Afcademic Computing Consortium. HISTORICAL PHOTOGfRAPH COLLECTION The goal of the Hifstorifcal Photograph Collectifon ifs to make the publifc aware of the qualifty and depth of the photograph collectifons owned by Specifal Collectifons and Unifversifty Archifves and to encourage further research on the orifgifnal photographifc materifals. Thifs collectifon offers a small samplifng of ifmages from more than 400,000 ifn the complete collectifon. Funded through a gift from Margaret and Thomas Hart. WESTERN WATERS DIGfITAL LIBRARY Thifs collectifon of hifstorifcal and contemporary resources focuses on the Columbifa Rifver Basifn. The collectifon provifdes access to well-organifzed, CORRIGAN-SOLARI continued from previous pafge areas ifn Oregon. Ciftifzens, local government officifals, busifness owners, and educators throughout the state have used Data for Local Communiftifes as a key resource ifn theifr work. The project has been haifled as a success across the regifon and ifs now beifng expanded to ifnclude Washifngton State. Robare has recently shared her substantifal knowledge of catalogifng at the natifonal and ifnternatifonal levels as well. As cochaifr of the Joifnt Iniftifatifve on Subject Traifnifng Materifals, a project of the Program for Cooperatifve Catalogifng and the Associfatifon for Lifbrary Collectifons and Technifcal Servifces, she led a natifonal effort to develop a traifnifng program to teach catalogifng skiflls ifn subject analysifs. Lynn El-Hoshy, a senifor catalogifng polifcy specifalifst at the Lifbrary of Congress and a partifcifpant ifn the project who wiftnessed Robare work on the ifniftifatifve, saifd, ?I was truly ifmpressed wifth Lorif?s superb command of the materifals and her abiflifty to establifsh rapport and communifcate wifth the traifnees. I can honestly say that thifs sifgnal achifevement would not have taken place wifthout her sustaifned efforts.? Based on her performance at the natifonal level, Robare was ifnvifted to present a two-day workshop usifng the traifnifng materifals at the Natifonal Lifbrary of Scotland and at Trifnifty College ifn Dublifn. More than 60 lifbrarifans from across Scotland and Ireland receifved the traifnifng durifng the workshop. comprehensifve ifnformatifon sources and analysifs based on hifgh-qualifty research and accurate hifstorifcal records, wifth the goal of enablifng westerners to meet the challenge of managifng theifr water resources wifsely ifn the twenty-first century. Partially funded by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. NORTHWEST DIGfITAL ARCHIVES Northwest Difgiftal Archifves (NWDA) provifdes enhanced access to archifval and manuscrifpt materifals ifn Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washifngton. Fifndifng aifds that help researchers ifdentiffy the locatifon and contents of archifved materifal housed ifn 15 northwest ifnstiftutifons are avaiflable for more than 2,200 iftems. A database of the findifng aifds allows users to search by keyword and other fields. NWDA contaifns findifng aifds on materifals coverifng several diffferent topifcs, ifncludifng major economifc forces affectifng the Northwest; urban and rural socifal and progressifve movements; local, state, regifonal, and natifonal poliftifcs; outdoor recreatifon; Natifve Amerifcan language and culture; and the place of relifgifous communiftifes ifn the regifon.
