Knight University Librarian The UO Libraries? web site at http://libweb.uoregon.edu sports a new look this fall, offering ?one-stop shopping? search features directly from the home page. The new front page allows users to immediately search three major categories of the library?s offerings: UO and Other Library Catalogs, Databases and Indexes, and Guides to Resources.The Catalog search feature lets patrons search the library?s holdings immediately by title, author, subject, keyword, and call number, all without needing to visit another search page. Advanced catalog searches and searches in other specialized catalogs, such as Orbis, are also accessible from the home page.Particularly useful to anyone looking for journal or magazine articles is the Databases & Index collection. Using convenient drop-down boxes, patrons can search the library?s indexes and databases alphabetically by subject or index name. An extensive set of newly revised Research Guides, arranged alphabetically by academic discipline, can also be accessed directly from the top level of the site.Information about the library and library services, as well as library news and listings of library events, can be easily retrieved on the home page by selecting topics from convenient drop-down menus. Most fi rst-level pages on the library?s web site have been reorganized, redesigned, and reformatted for consistency and ease of use.Additional content and design changes will be implemented in the coming months. Carver, associate university librarian for public services and collections since 1990, was named Philip H. Knight University Librarian effective July 1, 2002. She had served as interim university librarian since July 1, 2000, following the retirement of George W. Shipman.Carver feels privileged to be named the leader of Oregon?s largest academic library and is enthused about the future of research libraries. ?The UO Libraries are well positioned to play a leadership role in the transformation underway in how we produce, organize, and share information, ? she says. ?With our talented staff, engaged faculty, and the strong support of administrators and donors, we are empowered to continue our forward momentum at the forefront of these dramatic changes.?During Carver?s time as interim university librarian, the UO Libraries surpassed development goals, participated in the fi rst national survey to measure library service quality in academic libraries, initiated the library?s fi rst system-wide planning process, and started a campus conversation on issues related to changes in scholarly communication.In 1999, Carver was selected as the Oregon Library Association?s Librarian of the Year and has represented Oregon as an elected member of the American Library Association Council from 1998 to 2001. Carver?s undergraduate degree in political science is from the University of Massachusetts. She also holds master?s degrees in library science from the University of North Carolina and in public administration from the University of Virginia.
