It also contained a formal dining rm . and "artistic lobbies and Parlor ." The original owners o f the bldg . were Dr . J .R . Wetherbee and J . McClung . Dr . Wetherbee was thought t o have been the first pre-med student to complete the program at the Universit y of Oregon . Barker received a law degree from Harvard law School . He practiced law in Chicago and New York City . He retired from practice in 1938 . He an d his wife and daughter moved to Oregon and settled in Portland . Barker hired the firm of Lawrence and Holford to design an elegant house, appropriate for entertaining . Barker became the first vice-president of the University o f Oregon . This position was mainly a public relations post . He was a pas t president of the Oregon Historical Society and a leading historian . He was considered a national authority on Oregon pioneer Dr . John McLoughlin and wrot e many articles about him .
