ACADEMIC COSTUME
The history of academic dress goes bade several centuries, to the chill universities
where cap and gown and hood were needed for covering and warmth. Subse­
quently this has become a ceremonial costume, with certain standa.rdiz.ed feature!l.
For example, sleeves in the bachelor's gown are pointed, in the master's gown
afC oblong, in the doctor', gown are bell-shaped. Only the doctor's gown has
velvet facing. The hood is lined with the official colors of the degree-ronferring
institution: for the University of Oregon these aTC lemon yellow and green. The
outside trimming of the hood signifies the subject in which the degree was con­
ferred, as follows;

At the University of Oregon it is customary to hood doctors' candidates on the
platform. Masters' candidates are not hooded at that time but wear their hoods
in the academic procession. Traditionally, bachelors' candidates change the tassel
011 their cap from the front left to the front right as the degree is conferred. Ca~
are removed during prayer, the playing of the National Anthem and the Alma
11:ater, and during the commencement address if desired.

KENNETH JOHN O'CONNELL

Dean of the School of Law
Kenneth J. O'Connell was a member of the faculty of the School of Law from
1935 until 1958 when he resigned to accept an appointment by the Governor
to the Supreme Court of Oregon. His long period of service to the University
was marked by outstanding classroom performance, productive scholarly activ­
ities, and the successful completion in 1953 of a project, suggested and supported
by him, to provide the state with a modern revision of its statutory law in the
form of OREGON REVISED STATUTES. His judicial opinions have attained
national recognition. As an appellate court judge he consistently withheld de­
cision until he was familiar with all that had been written by other courts and
scholars upon the matter under consideration and until he was satisfied that the
rule to be applied was responsive to present needs and conditions. His close asso­
ciation with Oregon lawyers, both informally and in the organized activities of
the Bar, is valued highly by members of the legal profession. The influence of
Kenneth J. O'Connell upon the improvement of the law of Oregon, indirectly
through hundreds of students who had the benefit of his instruction and directly
by his work as Justice of the Supreme Court of Oregon, is an achievement which
the University of Oregon is proud to recognize.

Burt Brown Barker, rioneer son of the Pacific Northwest, after a distinguished
career in the practice 0 law in the East, and while still a young man, returned to
the land of his youth to give his generous talents to a multitude of good works.
Scholar and author in the field of Oregon History, he has been business leader,
patron of the arts, crusader for children's health, conservator of historic sites,
exemplar of international comity. The University of Oregon likes to believe that
the capstone of his fruitful career has been his service as the first, and only,
Vice-President of the University. In this post, to which he came in 1928, suc­
cessive pres~dents of the institution have prized the advantage of his vision and
wisdom. Successive generations of students of the University will always be
grateful for his friendship, his continuing solicitude for the integrity and ampli­
tude of their educational opportunities.
