(iommencement .footnotes The University's first commencement exercises were held in June 1878 in Deady Hall. Degrees were conferred upon four young men and one young women. Present classes approximate one thousand students, but the University con- tinues to recognize each graduate individually as he crosses the platform to receive congratulations from the President. Again this year Commencement Exercises include the former Baccalaureate observances, to encourage greater participation in the total program and to permit parents and students to return home on the day of the ceremony. All candidates for bachelor's degrees wear plain black gowns and black mor- tarboards. Candidates for advanced degrees wear the appropriate insignia of the academic degrees which they hold (except candidates for master's degrees, who are permitted to wear the insignia of that degree). Tassels for all caps are black, with one exception-it has become customary at the University of Oregon for members of Mortar Board, senior women's honorary society, to wear gold tassels. It has also become customary at the University of Oregon for candidates for bachelor's degrees to change the tassel on their cap from the front left to front right as the degree is conferred. The kinds and colors of gowns and hoods worn by members of the faculty designate the field in which the individual faculty member received his highest degree and the institution granting it. Bachelor's gowns have pointed sleeves, master's long closed sleeves (with a slit for the arm) and doctor's gowns round, open sleeves. There are no trimmings on the gown for the bachelor's or master's degree; but gowns worn by holders of doctor's degrees are faced down the front with black velvet with three bars of black velvet across the sleeves. In some cases this trimming is in the color designat- ing the field rather than black velvet. Hoods are worn around the neck and over the gown. The hood worn for the bachelor's degree is three feet in length, that for the master's three and one-half feet and for the doctor's degree four feet. The hood worn for the doctor's degree only has panels at the sides. The inside (lining) of the hood is of the official color of the institution grant- ing the degree. The color of the outside of the hood indicates the field in which the degree was received. The most common are as follows: arts and letters, white; commerce and accountancy, drab; dentistry, lilac; economics, copper; education, light blue; fine arts, including architecture, brown; humanities, crimson; law, purple; medicine, green; music, pink; philosophy, dark blue; physical education, sage green; science, golden yellow; theology, scarlet.
