EXTERIOR INTEGRITY : Minor changes, but original character intact . INTERIOR INTEGRITY : Moderate changes ; some original character remains . SITE INTEGRITY : Minor changes, but original character intact . SETTING INTEGR : Minor changes to character and relationship of surroundings . SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT : This house is significant primarily because Ormond Bean lived here and designe d it . He ran the Eugene branch office of Lawrence & Holford from June 1914 unti l March 1918, and was principal on-site coordinator during the construction o f all of Lawrence's university buildings until 1933 . Bean, the son of Distric t Court Judge Robert S . Bean, became a partner with Lawrence, Holford, and Fred Allyn . Bean was elected a Portland City Commissioner in 1932 and was a prominant public official there for many years . The house has some qualit y features more typical of a larger house, despite its modest size . The living room with its fireplace and porches on two sides is an unusual and pleasan t design feature . The house is presently in fair condition and could be easil y restored . It is one of only five known houses designed by Lawrence's firm s still remaining in Eugene . Ellis Lawrence did not personally design in th e bungalow style ; this is his firm's only surviving house in that style . SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT : In 1944, the university decided not to add to the existing women's dorm quad, & Lawrence concurred in the new site, pleased that the old quad would "not b e wrecked" . He proposed a new 5-story standard because of the increasing densit y of the campus . EF Lawrence personally developed the prelim . design which wa s approved less than a week before his death on Febr 27, 1946 . A 1st unit was no t bid "due to the high cost of construction" in late 1946 . Bids for both unit s opened July 22, 1947 were very high, & the building was somewhat redesigned , omitting some areas, & substituting less expensive details & central toilet s for the original small toilets shared by every other room . The building i s organized in groups of 14 women with kitchenettes, described as setting a precedent, but following in general the "cottage plan" which Lawrence had use d for UO dorms 25 years previously . Because of Lawrence's death, and the lack o f substantial other significance, the significance overall of is small . Construction documents were completed July 1947, but high bids on the dorms prompted deferral of bidding . With thi s building Lawrence intended to extend the main campus to Alder St ; future wings would extend to 13th Ave . with commercial along the street, & future science buildings would extend south, removing most existing houses & educatio n buildings . After his death, this planning was changed and the building resite d and redesigned, becoming "Science" and beginning the concentration of scienc e buildings which followed there . Of primary significance is the Classroom-La b Building's thwarted role in directing the growth of the campus . When the new site at University & 12th was selected in June 1949, redesign began, retainin g many aspects of the earlier design, but omitting brick veneer, bronze entr y doorframes, & other expensive features of the earlier Classroom-Lab Building . SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT : The Italianate Collier House, built 1885-86, housed university presidents , beginning in 1896 . In 1919 President PL Campbell asked Lawrence to rebuild the north porch & suggested that design responsibility be given to Campbell' s son-in-law, Walter Church ; Lawrence criticized his work . Church was a member o f the 1st graduating class in architectural design at the University in 1916, an d worked for Lawrence between his return from WWI and his enrollment at MIT ; h e later had a distinguished career in architecture in Portland . The wife o f faculty artist Larry Schroff assisted Campbell in selecting the color for th e front door, Lawrence suggesting a gray green . The 1930 Job# may indicate tha t Lawrence glassed in the east porch and/or added the fireplace - both project s for Pres . Kerr happening in the early 1930s . Lawrence had a room upstairs fro m 1942 until his death in this house on Febr .27, 1946 . This association wit h Church & Lawrence adds to the historic significance of the Collier House . Commerce Hall is the near twin o f Education Building (1916) in appearance . Except for alteration to the fron t stairs and the truncation of the entry gabled parapets of both buildings, an d the addition which joined them, the appearance of both is nearly as-built . Though the quality of the masonry of these two buildings was never matched i n Lawrence's other UO buildings, the architectural style of Commerce & Educatio n Halls set the pattern for Condon and Chapman Halls which followed wit h simplified detail, and to a lesser degree, for the Library . SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT : Condon Hall was named for Oregon geologist Thomas Condon, noted for hi s discoveries at John Day and for his specimen collection . It originally housed geology, geography, psychology, and temporarily the UO Library . Geography stil l occupies its original departmental office . Condon was intended to be the north wing of a larger building housing the sciences, but this plan was abandone d in the 1940s . The 1968 south addition was not built where Lawrence had provide d a brick knock-out panel, and its character is at odds with the origina l building, but Condon otherwise maintains most of its original exterio r character . Its greatest significance is its contribution to the ensemble of si x Lawrence-designed buildings on his quadrangle . This is the major built ensembl e of Lawrence's career . Condon's architectural style derives from his earlie r unbuilt designs for Whitman College and from his wings of Gilbert Hall . Fourteen years later he copied it for Chapman Hall . SIGNIFICANCE OF LAWRENCE FIRM'S DESIGN : EXTER .DETAILS/CRAFTSMANSHIP : no longer survives INTER .DETAILS/CRAFTSMANSHIP : no longer survives EXTERIOR INTEGRITY : INTERIOR INTEGRITY : SITE INTEGRITY : SETTING INTEGR : Major changes to character and relationship of surroundings . SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT : A month before the United States entered World War I, the University of Orego n requested the War Department for "the detail of an officer of the Regular Arm y to Direct Military Training", and began planning for an open-air drill hal l which was quickly designed and erected . A regular US officer was not mad e available, so a retired US Cavalry officer began drill training in December ; and in January 1918 a disabled British officer, Lieut .Col . John Leader, a veteran of the Somme, arrived and became Commandant . After the war the dril l hall was easily converted to an open-air gymnasium, and later to enclose d handball courts . It was razed to make way for construction of The Infirmary . The Drill Hall illustrates Lawrence's ability to combine a basicall y utilitarian approach with handsome proportions and some decorativ e embellishment that elevated the building beyond the ordinary . It is one of onl y 5 major structures by Lawrence on the UO campus which no longer exist . SOURCES/DOCUMENTS : Description (Location ) 5 blueprints
