Today the University enrolls some 17,000 students. Its 925 faculty are engaged in teaching, research, and scholarship covering a broad range of humanistic, scientific, and professional knowledge. The campus houses 35 departments and special programs in the liberal arts; nine professional schools and col!eges; 12 research bureaus, institutes, and centers; and a graduate division. The University's more than 80,000 alumni include two graduates who have won the Nobel Prize: William Parry Murphy, co-winner of the prize in 1934 !~re:n1:,v:,l10[~~~:; ~::~::a~::~:i~~ who won it in 1956 for the co-invention of the transistor. Kraus, President Alumni Association Academic Costume The history of academic dress goes back several centuries, to the chilly universities where cap and gown and hood were needed for covering and warmth. Sub­ quently this has become a ceremonial costume, with certain standardized features. For example, sleeves in the bachelor's gown are pointed, in the master's gown are oblong, in the doctor's gown are bell-shaped. Only the doctor's gown has velvet facing. The hood is lined with the official colors of the degree­ conferring institution; for the University of Oregon these are lemon yellow and green. Doctoral candidates carry their hoods and are hooded during the ceremony. Traditionally, baccalaureate candidates change tassels on their cap from front right to the front left as the degree is conferred. Caps are removed during prayer, the playing of the National Anthem and the Alma Mater, and during the commencement address if desired. Dyke Chemistry 7 8 Awards for Distinguished Service John Yeon A native of Oregon, John Y con through his di.~ringuished and original contri~ butions to architectural design brought widespread recognition to the state and helped to lay the foundation for a regional style of architecture in the Pacific Northwest. His epochal design of the Aubrey Watzek house in Portland, ~~;:~c~:~:ti~;=:~!~~~~lr:oJe:~al architecture could be happily blended with local materials and forms. In his sensitive landscape designs he was a pioneer in the use of plant materials native to the region. His long and assiduous devotion to the cause of conservation and preservation of both the natural landscape and historic structures has materially contributed to the legacy of beauty preserved for the delight of future generations of Oregonians. Eric William Allen, Jr. One of the most respected journalistic voices in the Northwest is that of the editor of the Medford Mail~Tribune, Eric William Allen, Jr. Son of the founding dean of the University's School of Journalism, he has in his own life embodied the finest aspects of the craft his father taught. He has written eloquently and perceptively in ddensc of our state's schools, its natural resources, and its innovative governmental systems. He is persuasive, never shrill. He writes from knowledge and experience, never in haste or anger. His comments are reprinted throughout Oregon and the nation. He rightly stands among the first citizens of our state and our era. Boren, whose disciplines are Old English and Middle English, has worked with undergraduate and graduate students at the University for seven years. His students are stimulated by the reguirement that they meet with him for individual reading sessions each term in addition to the normal classroom work. Concerned with human values and the need to incorporate the best of the past into the life of the present, his lectures arc enriched by chis philosophy. His is a total, personal commitment to the teaching art. This year he has chaired the University's Library committee and is an active member of the Friends of the Library. Within the English Department he has served as adviser to graduate students in Old English and as coordi­ nator of the Middle English program. Francoise Calin Francoise Calin kindles in the minds of her students of French a new awareness of the challenge of language. She requires of them a superior standard of accom­ plishment. Her lectures sparkle and inspire students to reach further into the materials presented. She combines human warmth with an ability to communicate her own deep intellectual commitment to liberal education. Professor Calin is rcsPonsible for directing all second year French classes and organizes conversation groups fo r second year students. She has been at Oregon since 1973.
