<dim:field mdschema="dc" element="description" qualifier="abstract" lang="en_US">The present study explored whether a nontraditional method of genetic counseling for amniocentesis, in which parents received their ultrasound results before deciding on the amniocentesis, was more effective than the traditional method and whether emotions influenced the decision making process. The subjects were genetic counseling clients with high-risk pregnancies. Clients of two genetic counseling centers, each using one of the two models, completed questionnaires throughout their counseling session, measuring changes in their psychological symptoms, their emotions toward amniocentesis, and their satisfaction with the counseling services. No conclusive evidence indicated the experimental method was more effective at improving these factors; however with both methods, client anxiety, relaxation, somatic well-being, and contentment improved. Emotions toward amniocentesis successfully predicted reported likelihood of having an amniocentesis, and reported likelihood was related to actual decisions. Clients expressed high satisfaction with the counseling they received</dim:field>
