Nicholson Previous Recipients 1956 1965 Ernest Bloch Edith S. Green James H. Gilbert Karl William Onthank Charles A. Sprague Paul Stuart \Vright Awards for Distinguished Service Jacob Avshalomov Of the creative gifts, that of music evokes vibrant response in the audience. In this his chosen field, Jacob Avshalomov has been accorded national awards as a composer and conductor. The vitality of his work brings special pleasure to his listeners and rich experiences to the performers. For more than twenty years the cultural life of Portland has been enhanced eloquently by his artistry and skill as the conductor of the Portland Junior Symphony. Student, teacher, composer, and lecturer, his radiant talent has captivated audiences throughout Oregon. Gordon Waverly Gilkey Artist, collector-conservator, Gordon Waverly Gilkey has brought to his native Oregon a rare insight to an exacting art. Internationally recognized as a printmaker and as a discriminating collector of prints, he is known for his own art work which has heen exhibited widely and for his personal collection judged one of the finest in the \Vestern states. As a conservator of fine art, he was founder of the United States Commission for the Protection and Salvage of Artistic and Historic Monuments in the \Var Areas at the onset of \Vorld \Var II. He became the founder and director of the International Exchange Print Exhibits. Through various trusteeships with the Portland Art Museum and School, Oregon Museum of Science and Industry and the Oregon Art Alliance, he has shared his expertise widely and in sharing has enriched the cultural lives of his fellow Oregonians. Wesley G. Nicholson Wisdom, warmth and a perceptive understanding of the corroding needs of those to whom he has ministered has characterized the more than fifty years of service of Wesley G. Nicholson. His insight into the workings of human nature penetrates cultural, racial and sectarian barriers. His devotion to protecting the fragile human spirit in the sprawling stress of urban living has inspired all of those privileged to have known him. His sturdy independence, personal commitment to social causes, and uncounted hours of caring service have been a kindly light to those seeking direction in today's chaotic and confusing world. 1957 Frank L. Clark, eleventh President of the University of Oregon 1969-1975, retires this June after twenty-seven years of service to the University. His excellence as a teacher and scholar in Rhetoric and Public Address remains vivid in the minds of those who studied with him. He has proven his leadership in educational administration as a Department Head, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts, Dean of Facul- ties, and as President. Under his guidance the University of Oregon has grown in stature as a distinguished university. He has made clear his concern for faculty and student rights and his insistence that the Uni- versity must remain a place to uphold the dignity of thought and learn- ing. He has always insisted on the right of full and fair inquiry-in the belief that a free exchange of ideas ultimately brings reason and wisdom into the conduct of human affairs. McFee [44 ] [4SJ Academic Costume The history of academic dress goes back several centuries, to the chill univer- sities where cap and gown and hood were needed for covering and warmth. Subsequently this has become a ceremonial costume, with certain standardized features. For example, sleeves in the bachelor's gown are pointed, in the master's gown are oblong, in the doctor's gown are bell-shaped. Only the doctor's gown has velvet facing. The hood is lined with the official colors of the degree- conferring institution; for the University of Oregon these are lemon yellow and green. The outside trimming of the hood and the color of the tassel signify the subject in which the degree is conferred, as follows: Maize White Drab Lilac Copper Light Blue Orange Brown Russet Crimson Purple Lemon Green Pink Apricot Silver Gray Olive Grccn Dark Blue Sage Green Peacock Blue Salmon Pink Golden Yellow Citron Scarlet Gray Agriculture Arts, Letters, Humanities Commerce, Accountancy, Business Dentistry Economics Education Engineering Fine Arts, including Architecture Fore.stry Journalism Law Library Science Medicine Mmic Nursing Oratory, Speech Pharmacy Philosophy Physical Education Public Administration, including Foreign Service Public Health Science Social Work Theology Veterinary Science At the University of Oregon it is cmtomary for master candidates to wear their hoods in the academic procession. Doctoral candidates carry their hoods and are hooded during the ct'!"cmony. Traditionally bachelor candidates change tassles on their caps from the front right to the front left as the degree is conferred. Caps are removed during prayer, the playing of the National Anthem and the Alma Mater, and during the commencement address if desired.
