Forest and watershed restoration work is closely
tied to the history and identity of Oregon’s South
Coast, which has long relied on its woods and
waters for forestry, fishing, agriculture, and sustenance.
Declines in these industries and the vitality
of South Coast landscapes have prompted
new forms of stewardship to restore ecological
structure and function, and create resilient local
economies. Although this work has helped produce
diverse environmental benefits, its economic impacts
have been less well understood. Illuminating
these economic impacts can help draw increased
investments to regions like the South Coast and
magnify the benefits of restoration for rural workers,
businesses, and communities. With this in
mind, we documented trends in restoration funding
and types of work on the South Coast from 2001
to 2010; the role of restoration in supporting local
businesses; the challenges that these businesses
face; and the economic and employment impacts
of restoration. From this, we developed recommendations
for supporting and expanding the local restoration
industry. |
