Abstract

This project deals with the Shelton-McMurphy property as an example of an historic/cultural landscape, which contains within it the visible signs of countless interactions between the natural and built environments. The history and evolution of the property, in its cultural and geographical context, will be viewed and interpreted in visual, aesthetic, physical, and vegetative terms. The process will be achieved through a three-tiered plan aimed at presenting the Shelton-McMurphy property as one of the paradigms of the ordinary American landscape worth preserving. Throughout this process, the bonds which link the Shelton-McMurphy property to its two neighbors, Skinner Butte and the railroad depot, will be described and elaborated upon as they play a central role in determining this significance.
