Abstract
Lisan Wang was greatly influenced by Chinese culture and other art forms. This
paper will discuss poetic imagery as a tool to fulfill the aesthetic expressions in Wang’s
music. In addition to musical analysis, this paper will also consider the pedagogical
aspects of Wang’s piano compositions in order to focus attention not only on performing
but also teaching his works.
This paper will first identify the poetic imagery in Wang’s music. A brief overview
of the development of modern Chinese piano music will be given, highlighting the
influence of Western composers such as Bela Bartok and Claude Debussy, and how these
influences affect Wang’s compositional style.
I will analyze Wang’s poetic imagery in his most representative piano works,
including the piano suites Impressions of Paintings by Higashiyama Kaii and The Other
Mountains.
Finally, I will categorize all Lisan Wang’s piano works into preparatory, elementary
to intermediate, advanced, and concert levels as a teaching reference.
