The multiple sclerosis patients endorsed an average of 3.0 somatic symptoms on structured interview, the multiple personality subjects an average of 14.5. The somatic symptoms characteristic of neurological illness were trouble walking, paralysis, and muscle weakness. Those characteristic of psychiatric illness were genitourinary and gastrointestinal symptoms.
