About 420,000 board feet (MBF) of timber will be removed through stand density reduction to promote the development of Late Old Structure (LOS) ponderosa pine forest. The Deschutes National Forest proposes to issue a special use permit to Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) authorizing the construction of a co-locatable communications tower and building to be located on the Walker Mountain Communication Site. In addition, BPA will remove two aged Forest Service towers and one building on the south end of the electronic site where historically significant buildings are located. Midstate Electric would remove the associated overhead powerline to those structures. All areas where removal takes place would be rehabilitated to a condition as close to the surrounding character of the site, as reasonable. The proposed action would require an amendment to the Deschutes National Forest Land and Resource Management Plan and the Walker Mountain Communications Site 1995 Revised Management and Development Plan.Item Open Access Murray fire salvage decision notice and finding of no significant impact(2003-06-19) Paulina Ranger District (Or.)Announces decision to implement Alternative 3 of project EA, with modifications for higher levels of snag retention. Also includes seedling protective measures against big game and pocket gophers for four years.Item Open Access Deep Creek watershed restoration environmental assessment(2004-06) Paulina Ranger District (Or.)Proposes to improve watershed health by restoring and managing highly impacted streams, restoring streams to a more desired pattern, profile, and dimension, and improving aquatic habitats to support redband trout populations. Includes replacing culverts to allow passage of flood flows and improving upstream access for redband trout, creating water developments, exclosures, and placing large wood to distribute livestock better, repairing headcuts and exposed cutbanks, closing and decommissioning roads, and reconstructing channel reaches to reduce instream sedimentation.Item Open Access Crooked River Ranch fuels project decision memo(2006) Crooked River National Grassland (Or.)Announces implementation of project to reduce fuels and resultant wildfire risk on 200 acres adjacent to the ranch. Designated a wildlife-urban area, the project includes cutting juniper trees less than 12" (dbh) with chainsaws, scattering and burning junipers in light areas, hauling off and selling juniper trees in denser areas, and mowing brush to a depth of a foot or less within 100 feet of the property line.Item Open Access Murray fire salvage environmental assessment(2003-04) Paulina Ranger District (Or.)Proposes to salvage approximately 514 MBF of trees that are dying or were killed by the July 2002 wildfire, and to plant conifers within a 140-acre area. Includes seedling protective measures against big game and pocket gophers for four years.Item Open Access Turnpike Pit medusahead control decision notice and finding of no significant impact(2005-06) Paulina Ranger District (Or.)Announces decision to implement Alternative 2 of the project EA, controlling the medusahead population within the Turnpike Pit on the southeast edge near the 5840-780 entrance road before it spreads to adjacent grasslands using the herbicide glyphosate (Glypro).Item Open Access Deep vegetation management project record of decision(2004-01) Paulina Ranger District (Or.)Announces decision to implement Alternative C of project Supplementary EIS, to improve vegetative diversity, reduce the current fire hazard, improve the amount of shade producing vegetation and large woody material for streams, and reduce sedimentation from roads. Includes improvement cutting (5688 acres), commercial thinning (562 acres), clearcutting with reserve trees (60 acres), precommercial thinning (6285 acres), fuels treatments including underburning, and other activities such as riparian planting (28 miles), culvert replacements, road closing and decommissioning, and aspen, willow, and meadow enhancement.Item Open Access Turnpike Pit medusahead control environmental assessment (final)(2005-06) Paulina Ranger District (Or.)Proposes to control the medusahead population within the Turnpike Pit on the southeast edge near the 5840-780 entrance road before it spreads to adjacent grasslands, using the herbicide glyphosate (Glypro).Item Open Access Turnpike Pit medusahead control environmental assessment(2005-03) Paulina Ranger District (Or.)Proposes to control the medusahead population within the Turnpike Pit on the southeast edge near the 5840-780 before it spreads to adjacent grasslands, using the herbicide glyphosate (Glypro).Item Open Access Westside allotments decision notice, finding of no significant impact, and environmental assessment(2005-09) Paulina Ranger District (Or.)EA proposes to continue authorization of grazing on the Deep Creek, Derr, Happy, Little Summit, and Roba allotments within the Deep Creek watershed and portions of the Mountain Creek, Rock Creek, Paulina Creek, and lower North Fork Crooked River watersheds.
