Film Studies and New Media
Permanent URI for this collection
This collection contains the work of graduate students and faculty in the areas of film studies, new media and visual culture.
Film Studies developed as an academic field in the 1970s out of many disciplines, including Feminist Theory and Cultural Studies, and remains vitally interdisciplinary. It also remains sensitive to new developments in technology, reflected in increasing attention to issues of new media. Housed within the English Department, the University of Oregon Film Studies program, led by faculty members Kathleen Rowe Karlyn, Michael Aronson and Priscilla Ovalle, emphasizes film and television history, theory and criticism. Karlyn is the author of The Unruly Woman: Gender and the Genres of Laughter, a book recognized in 1996 by the American Culture/Popular Culture Association as the year's best feminist study of popular culture. Aronson's research and publications have focused on early film, movie exhibition, and reception and digital cinema. Ovalle's areas of interest include representation of Latinas in film and television, and issues of new media.
