The Micronesia and South Pacific Program was established in 1988 at the University of Oregon to assist with the development of sustainable communities in the Pacific islands.The university affiliation faculty development program linked the University of Oregon with the University of the South Pacific and the College of Micronesia-FSM, Palau Community College, and the College of the Marshall Islands.     The University of Oregon Micronesia and South Pacific Program has concluded its ninth year of providing service to communities in the Pacific islands. This year the program completed a total of 24 projects throughout Micronesia and, to a limited extent, in the south Pacific. This year saw the closure of the affiliation program with the University of the South Pacific in Fiji, as the funding provided by the U.S. Information Agency terminated after five years.

    RMI Print Media Upgrade Project

    The Ministry of Education requested a media consultant to assist the Support Services division in improving the quality and publication frequency of the RMI Gazette and the Education Newsletter. A request was made for assistance in writing and editing, information gathering, layout, printing, and photo developing. In addition to this project, the technical assistant was asked to train staff members of the Head Start program in computer skills, including word processing and desktop publishing, so that they can produce a newsletter to be sent to parents of students in the program, and create other documents in-house, as needed.

    The Marshall Islands, once self sufficient in food production, have become dependent on imported foods. In addition to the economic problems created by this situation, the Marshallese people suffer a high incidence of malnutrition and diet-related diseases. In an effort to address these problems, the Ministry of R&D, Agriculture Division has developed its Replanting for Self-Reliance Program with the following goals: • Promote opportunities for increased production of basic staple crops. • Promote higher yielding varieties of root crops and improved fruit tree varieties. • Provide training and technical assistance in the crop scheme.

    Lwen Wolena Kosrae! is a self-directed introduction to Kosraean language and culture. It has been specifically developed for technical assistants and anthropology students from the University of Oregon who will be working on a variety of projects on Kosrae and who want to gain some language and cultural background before they go to Micronesia. The course materials, which include this workbook, an audio cassette and a video tape, are designed for the student to view the video first and then work through the workbook with the accompanying audio tape.

    Kaselehlia Pohnpei! Workbook and Lab Manual: Lesson Two

    Kaselehlia Pohnpei divides into a video component, an audio component and a workbook and lab manual. Together they form an integrated package for learning conversational Pohnpeian. Each video first presents elicitations of language samples from a native speaker. Learners then have a chance both to hear the language demonstrated and to repeat it. We then see the language played out in a continuing story that incorporates the language sample into a natural setting. It is not expected that every word on the video be immediately understood. Rather, the function of the video is to acquaint the learner with the sound and rhythm of the language and to provide opportunities to see and hear it spoken authentically. It is the audio tapes and workbook exercises that provide the bulk of the comprehension and production practice with the language introduced in the video. Learners may also find the glossed videoscripts of the episodes interesting and useful for additional investigation into the language. We have also included cultural notes for each scene which might be useful for understanding the context of the language presented.

    In the summer of 1989, the United States Information Agency contracted with a library consultant to perform an assessment of libraries in Micronesia. This assessment was designed to: • Locate existing libraries throughout the region, • Determine the strengths and weaknesses of these libraries and to suggest ways to improve library collections and level of service. • Determine if resource sharing could distribute scarce information resources efficiently and effectively throughout the region, and to suggest ways in which new information technologies might be employed within the existing libraries.
