This is a brief history of research work carried out by Harden M. McConnell (July 18, 1927 – October 8, 2014), American physical chemist, and his graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, colleagues carried out while at Shell Development Company in Emeryville, CA, at the California Institute of Technology (CIT), and at Stanford University.
