Abstract
This preliminary assessment identifies the historic significance of the Erb Memorial
Union’s landscape features, exterior facades, and interior spaces.
The areas surveyed are shown on the Surveyed Areas and Ranking maps (pp. 6-8). Each
area with potential historic significance is assigned a ranking of primary, secondary, or tertiary.
This ranking is based upon the level of historic significance (high, medium, or low) and level of
integrity, defined as the degree to which the key historic elements are evident today (excellent,
good, fair, or poor). Refer to Appendix D for a description of the ranking methodology.
Overall, the Erb Memorial Union (EMU) has a secondary historic ranking (UO 4.0 Survey
of Buildings). This means that it is likely to be eligible for listing in the National Register of
Historic Places. The EMU did not receive a primary ranking due to its compromised integrity
(substantial additions). However, there are many individual spaces and features within
the EMU that have primary historic significance. It is important to identify these historically
significant features and consider ways to preserve them.
