Abstract

This chapter examines the experiences of mothering among Mexican American women in the early 21st century. Mexican Americans are a large and growing minority group due to both immigration and fertility rates. Chicana mothering involves acting as a guardian or mediator between racial messages from the “outside world” (school, media, inter-racial social networks) and their children. Mothers are responsible for overseeing their children’s growth and development; as minorities, this often requires defusing negative racial messages and replacing them with affirmation.
