Abstract

Over several years working in a bead store, and more recently studying ancient beads from Southeast Asia, I frequently saw beads that had circular or half-moon-shaped marks on their surface (Figure 1). Most of the beads were old, fairly large, and spherical. The source and meaning of these marks have generally puzzled bead scholars.
