Museums are always looking for the best way to engage audiences. Mobile technology is advancing quickly and smartphones are quickly becoming commonplace. A museum smartphone application can provide visitors with a more immersive, engaging, and informative experience than can be had with traditional museum learning tools. Mobile technologies are becoming more important as generations of young people are becoming accustomed to absorbing all kinds of information from handheld and electronic devices. By embracing new technologies, museums are indicating that they understand the learning styles and interests of their visitors. Building an application that can run on any smartphone platform will allow the museum to reach the largest possible audience. In this dual research project I read published research in the areas of mobile technology in museums as well as museums and learning and used this information to inform my choices in the building of a smartphone application for the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art (JSMA).en_US
