This thesis deals with a plan for the partial solution of personnel problems in sororities at the University of Oregon as it was evolved by the Personnel department and established and directed by the Dean of Women. The critical point of the plant involved the preparation of housemothers for effective personnel work in sororities in an effort to help these organizations with their varied problems and particularly those in finance which had been brought on by the economic depression of 1929. This paper will endeavor to set forth the entire program which was formulated in the spring of 1930, and started in the fall of the same year, thus covering a period of five years. The primary purpose in reporting this work is (1) to show how individual and group guidance can be made more effective by trained housemothers definitely qualified to fill such positions and how they helped to solve many problems; (2) to point out to university officials, to the officers of the national sororities, to the alumnae groups, the means of bringing these organizations into closer relationship with the administration as educational units functioning as a worthwhile part of the university; (3) to provide information which may serve as a guide and a book of instructions to women who are employed as housemothers in the future at the University of Oregon.en_US
