Abstract
This thesis is an Italian translation of the full collection of haikus composed in
Spanish by the late Uruguayan author Mario Benedetti (1920-2009) originally published
in January 1999 in Madrid. The collection is one ofBenedetti's least known works, and
exhibits in a unique fashion his satirical views on society as a whole during the 201h
century. Benedetti used traditional methods, of three phrases with juxtaposing imagery
generally relating to nature, to make a contemporary collection ofhaikus. I have
introduced this translation with an English introduction explaining the importance of
Benedetti and these haikus, a detailed explanation of chosen poems and their relation to
traditional haiku overarching themes, and lastly my translation method.
