Abstract
If free trade is the tonic of my historical harmonic on tariff trends, their causes and effects, it is only because the authorities I quote and the experts upon whose economic writings I have drawn have favored in varying degree the cause of free trade, either positively with economic facts to prove their points, or negatively by the absence of economic facts in their case for protection (H. C. Carey being an amusing example of the letter.) Although when I first sat down to the typewriter I was convinced of the economic soundness of free trade and the economic fallacies of the protectionist arguments, I still held to the belief that a satisfactory case for the protectionist, from his viewpoint, could put forward, and went to considerable pains to do so.
