PREPARING FOR "M" DAY: OREGON NATIONAL GUARD TRAINING SITES, 1900-1940

Military history in Oregon is an often-overlooked subject despite the state's ample history and historic resources. While in some cases, negative political feelings about the military or its actions have erased sites and history from public memory, this does not seem to be the case with the early history of the Oregon National Guard. Instead, there seems to be a general gap in public knowledge and professional interest in the significant time period stretching from the Spanish-American War to the eave of the Second World War, 1898- 1940. This terminal project presents the development of the Oregon National Guard during a portion of this period (1900-1940) from a small state militia to an orderly military force as seen through its built environment. Using the National Register Multiple Property Documentation form as a framework, historic contexts, property types and registration requirements have been created in an effort to aid the Oregon Military Department in future planning and preservation of their historic resources. It is hoped that through this terminal project the true significance of previously unrecognized resources is clarified.
