Item Open Access The Image User and the Search for Images(The J. Paul Getty Trust, Getty Research Institute, 2002) Sundt, Christine L., 1944-Users seeking images are faced with many obstacles, not the least of which is how to use words and terms to retrieve an image that resides clearly in their minds. Illustrating a series of paintings by the famous Italian artist, Orazio Gentileschi (1563-1639), I demonstrate that what might be broadly similar in description -- paintings showing the biblical story of Lot following the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah -- can be wholly different in depiction, even by the same artist. Additional barriers to efficient image retrieval include language and cultural differences.Item Open Access Digital Projects Past and Present – Survivors or Fossils?(2005-01-26T19:45:14Z) Sundt, Christine L., 1944-The publication of a new project adds prestige and honor to its author(s), but what happens after the article or notice is filed away? Review and analysis of approximately 50 projects published in Visual Resources: An International Journal of Documentation, between 1980 and the present, reveals that roughly 75% are still in existence but among that group only 40% have advanced beyond their original goals or promises. Of the total number only a third have advanced significantly while 10% showed some progress and another 30% remain but only as static or frozen projects. This article identifies the survivors and fossils and offers speculation about common causes of success and/or failure.Item Open Access The Case for Digital Images(College Art Association of America, 2004-09) Sundt, Christine L., 1944-Kodak's announcement that its consumer line of slide projectors would be discontinued propelled many arts administrators to look seriously at digital images as replacements for 35mm slides. This article outlines how to approach the change from analog to digital by analyzing common assumptions and some misconceptions.
